fwiw every time I go to check for updates after seeing Edge update post, I find that it has auto-updated silently & Settings | system has background off...

Chromium browser's "Parallel downloading" feature nowadays isn't as effective as it used to be in my experience. For me, most of the time it doesn't improve downloading speed anymore.
My internet speed is already slow enough so I'm back to using a download manager again even though I wanted to avoid it.
Parallel downloading is still effective in many cases, certainly better than default but not as good as it used to be for whatever reason.
