You could always just backup important documents externally on offline removable storage. If you aren't making proper backups then you're pretty much asking to get "wrecked by Windows updates m8".
Nowadays, there's more chance of getting toasted by Windows Update than ransomware.
We should make "Borkware" a thing. Get your lady a "borkware-proof backup" so she doesn't get fired after her Windows work laptop does an update.

Actually, support forums are filled with people, who can not access their files, because Windows Defender is holding them hostage. Sounds familiar?
BTW, MS made me to re-think the location of my documents. From now on, I remove documents and create symlink to ramdisk, what could be safer?!

My guess is they accidentally pushed out a previous RTM build instead of the patched final build. Microsoft needs to stop push out these betas. With every new build we have to start from scratch and it takes 6 months to get rid of all the bugs, then new build and the cycle repeats itself. They're creating their own problems.
It is what I do since ages, my docs are always on another partition/disk.
The C drive is just for the system files.
