I find that a really good photograph may not make a good desk wallpaper for me because I use on a temp basis as I think most do, my desk as a folder & workplace, but busy wallpapers can hide elements / icons you may using but also being who I am like a variety of desktop backgrounds I change often so on the whole I prefer plain & on this display they have to be HQ also or it really irritates me :)

My desktop wall paper is just plain blueish mint (because my OS is Linux Mint). It may be boring but easy on my eyes.
You can try the Cinnamon Dynamic Wallpaper on Linux Mint; it is both beautiful and easy on the eyes.

What tools do you use to change the icons?

I've downloaded the icon files & just do it manually, I've in the past used a couple of programs such as Stardock Icon Packager but I found just changing the icons I wanted to for me was better, there are thousands of icons around, I just prefer the look I rekon, I change the Brave icon to a stolen Edge one mainly for others who use the PC & really dislike the Brave icon :)

I find the same thing, too. Even though I tend to pin most of my apps on the taskbar, I also like a cleaner wallpaper with at least open areas to position the icons in. It make them easier to see :)
