My desktop wall paper is just plain blueish mint (because my OS is Linux Mint). It may be boring but easy on my eyes.

I find that a really good photograph may not make a good desk wallpaper for me because I use on a temp basis as I think most do, my desk as a folder & workplace, but busy wallpapers can hide elements / icons you may using but also being who I am like a variety of desktop backgrounds I change often so on the whole I prefer plain & on this display they have to be HQ also or it really irritates me

You can try the Cinnamon Dynamic Wallpaper on Linux Mint; it is both beautiful and easy on the eyes.

What tools do you use to change the icons?

I've downloaded the icon files & just do it manually, I've in the past used a couple of programs such as Stardock Icon Packager but I found just changing the icons I wanted to for me was better, there are thousands of icons around, I just prefer the look I rekon, I change the Brave icon to a stolen Edge one mainly for others who use the PC & really dislike the Brave icon

I find the same thing, too. Even though I tend to pin most of my apps on the taskbar, I also like a cleaner wallpaper with at least open areas to position the icons in. It make them easier to see
