If you already have a license for Windows 7 or 8, you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free. If you are going to buy a cheap key from eBay or elsewhere, just be aware that the very cheap licenses which are emailed to you, are volume license keys which are being illegally sold and in some cases will eventually be blacklisted by Microsoft.

You may be able to find cheap Windows COA stickers taken from old PCs, which you can use to activate Windows. Since you live in Germany, due to a court ruling, it is legal there to use OEM COA stickers from a computer that is no longer being used to activate Windows on another computer. This can be done even with a Windows 7 or 8 key, as Windows 10 can be activated with them. However, outside of Germany it's not legal to reuse these COAs from computers that came preinstalled with Windows, as the license is only for the computer it came preinstalled on.

A third option, is to install Windows 10 without activating it. There are some minor limitations such as not being able to change the desktop wallpaper. But you can legally use Windows 10 without activating it and there is no time limit on its use.

Alternatively, you could take a risk and purchase a very cheap (illegal) licence on ebay. They probably work fine, but who knows ?

I think he's asking about process where students can get license for free or cheap rather than regular buying. I think education institution are the ones to provide it in this case.

If you already have a license for Windows 7 or 8, you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

That's the best way. Once you upgrade, you can link your Microsoft Account for your digital entitlement (aka it links your Microsoft Account to your Windows 10 license).

They keys are coming from a Vietnamese retailer called MediaMart and are most likely volume license keys.
