I don't know Apple stuff, but how could they've not seen this before release?

It reminds me of the firewall update on the Windows products around the same time last year that shipped with a load of problems on release and nobody noticed it during beta, for some reason.

fwiw I updated to new macOS last night and so far not seeing any issues, I'm running Malwarebytes, which Apple sorta recommends. When you say "they've" you meant ESET, correct? The first time I read it, I thought you were referring to Apple! imo Apple would say don't clutter our OS with ESET. I was a victim of win10 firewall/ESET crash about a year ago.

Absolutely. This is entirely on ESET for not testing their product on the new OS release.
