Hmm, very clever. Let's make one check about those entries:

FRST.gif
Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine.

Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on
    FRST.gif
    icon and select
    RunAsAdmin.jpg
Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finishes FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

Restarted with GUpdate disabled and ran Windows for an hour without popups -- restarted with GUpdate enabled and had popups wihin minutes. Ran the fix in both instances but they came out identical. Doesn't appear to be anything noteworthy. Here's the file.

Enabled startup items, restarted, got a popup, deep scanned with Zemana, no results. Attached the report.

What do you think? Maybe just uninstall and re-install Chrome? Delete the GoogleUpdate.exe and let Chrome fix a new version of it? I'm kinda curious how this happened.

Bingo!

I chose to quarantine, is that good enough?

Both "GUpdate" entries were disabled when I ran the scan and now they're completely gone from my startup list.

Yes!

Was without Windows for a couple of days so couldn't check, but now I'm back. Entries are still gone and no more pop-ups. Should I worry about not having GoogleUpdate.exe anymore, for Chrome? :)

Thanks for all the help!
