It’s time to envision a world without passwords. In fact, it’s time to make that world a reality.

LastPass is excited to announce passwordless login to the LastPass vault through the LastPass Authenticator for individuals and businesses.

Once you pair LastPass Authenticator to your LastPass vault, you’ll be able to enjoy one-tap login that’s password-free, which means no more master password to access your vault.

Longer-term, LastPass is actively building FIDO2 compliant components and supporting authentication mechanisms, such as biometric face and fingerprint ID and the addition of hardware security keys, like YubiKey. That passwordless offering will be added later this year – so stay tuned!

Today, though, LastPass is making passwordless a reality through the LastPass Authenticator app.

Whether you use LastPass to keep your personal or professional credentials safe, let’s look at the advantages of a passwordless login experience, and how to get and end-to-end experience sooner using LastPass.

LastPass users who set up passwordless access need the LastPass Authenticator application to do so currently. Support for other passwordless authentication systems will be added in the future according to LastPass, but for now, only the Authenticator application offers this functionality.

LastPass users verify login requests in the LastPass Authenticator application to sign-in to their accounts; it is no longer necessary to type or paste the main password of the account to gain access once passwordless has been enabled for the account.

LastPass notes that passwordless sign-in is offering advantages over traditional password-based logins: according to the company, passwordless takes the stress out of having to pick and remember passwords, and it blocks data breaches and hacks that use stolen passwords. Passwordless authentication requires access to the LastPass Authenticator application on the other hand. In the future, customers may sign-in using biometric authentication or hardware security keys.

The main account password is still needed for certain operations. Passwordless sign-in to LastPass requires access to the LastPass Authenticator application; if the app is not available, e.g., when the phone is lost, stolen or damaged, then it is necessary to use the main password to gain access to the account.

The master password is required to add new devices to the list of trusted devices. Anyone with access to the LastPass application could otherwise sign-in to a user's vault.

LastPass customers need to download the Authenticator application to their mobile devices and set up passwordless in their Vault to switch to the new authentication method.

Lastpass, maker of the password management service of the same name, announced today that customers may now use FIDO2 compatible authenticators on desktop devices for passwordless logins to their vaults.

The new feature is available for all customers, including free users, premium users, families and also business customers.

Up until now, LastPass customers had to use the LastPass Authenticator application on desktop devices for passwordless sign-ins. The company launched biometric authentication support for passwordless logins on mobile, but not on desktop; this changes with today's announcement that FIDO2 compatible authenticators may now be used on desktop devices.

Customers who use the LastPass Authenticator application to sign-in to their vaults may continue using so, as nothing changes on that front. There is the possibility to switch to using a different authenticator now, and customers who never enabled passwordless login support for their account may select either of the available options, if they want to set up passwordless authentication for their account.
