The CEO of messaging app Telegram, Pavel Durov, is currently in France, where he was arrested and charged for crimes committed by third parties using his app. As of today, his problems have just got worse because South Korean police have said that they're now launching a preliminary investigation on suspicions that the platform abetted deepfake sex crimes.

For the record, deepfake sex crimes refer to videos and pictures of real people with their faces digitally edited onto nude bodies. Even though it's a fake, it can be very damaging to someone's reputation if just one person thinks it's real and starts gossiping.
It seems as though Durov's major mistake was running a laissez-faire messaging platform with not much content moderation. It's unclear right now how things will play out, but it's very doubtful that Telegram will continue operating the way it has been. The most likely outcomes are that Telegram gets ordered to moderate content, it gets sold to a new owner who will moderate content, or it simply ceases operations.

Telegram stands out like a sore thumb, I was wondering when governments start to deal with it. Imagine if everyone would have access to an uncensored info. The horror.
For the record, my country already has the ministry of truth, it deals with "misinformation", which prove to be the truth a few months later, sometimes days or hours. :ROFLMAO:

I see a lot of vatniks on Twitter crying about Telegram; they scream "censorship", "free speech". There's just one thing—banning the illegal content isn't censorship. It's just right thing to do.
Telegram isn't end-to-end encrypted (only secret chats, according to them), it has basic encryption which means they hold all the keys. Meaning they can see all the content and remove it if it breaks the rules of the platform or law. Telegram didn't do any of that and this is why Durov got into trouble.

Have you wondered why is Russian military is in total state of panic, as well as Russian authorities? Russian military uses Telegram for everything, even launching their missiles. They literally call Durov "chief of communications". If French authorities got access to Telegrams encryption keys, they would have access to entire Russian military communication which would be extremely bad.

The problem is that governments decide what is illegal. Like it is illegal to say that men can not have babies. And Telegram already bans certain groups, like holocaust related, this is just a ruse.

Isn't this what government is for? To make the rules by which people should obey?

I'm not saying everything governments do is good; but obviously some boundaries need to be set.

But they don't ban selling drugs, child pornography, fake news and other illegal stuff.

In my country (France), Pavel Durov was indicted and released, but with judicial supervision.

- He had to pay bail of 5 million euros.
- present himself at the police station to justify his presence
- Not to leave France

I don't know whether Durov will cooperate, given what's happening on Telegram, but in my opinion, this application is no longer safe for cyber-criminals.

It was only safe for criminals because Durov allowed that. If he followed the law and forbade selling drugs, sharing child pornography he wouldn't had been arrested. Thanks to France for doing us a favor.

I hate it. I don't want anyone to tell me what is the truth and what isn't. I have a brain to think for myself.

It truly is a dystopia, and with the suppression of telegram, the dystopia only gets stronger or more real. Re child pornography...I remember how Epstein magically disappeared with no word muttered. An effective way to shut down platforms because you don't like their politics, accuse them of drug dealing and child pornography, it's a tactic that seems to work with masses believing that they actually lived under 'freedom' as a result of these measures.

Problem is many people don't think for themselves, they believe any nonsense post they see on social media. For example, all the dumb conspiracy theories going around. I've always said, social media makes people dumber and lazier.

What's scary, there are numerous cases where people and children literally died because of these conspiracy theorists. This is why social media especially needs to be regulated. CBC (Canadian public broadcaster) in a show called Marketplace had a great reportage where they followed leaders anti-vax movement and then talked to parents whose kids almost died because they didn't vaccinate their children as they were persuaded by anti-vaxxers on social media. In those cases, someone needs to be held responsible (my opinion: both, social media sites and conspiracy theorists).

What so many people fail to realize or understand is by joining these media sites, I guess Telegram qualifies as social media, you are not guaranteed free speech. They agree to terms of use, in which some limitations of speech apply.

Maybe they should spend the time to read and understand those terms. I see it on Facebook as well. "I have a right to say (this). It's my right." Well, no it isn't. You gave that up when you agreed to their terms of use.

True, people don't think for themselves these days. Hell, they don't even know where they are with their noses buried in their phones. However, when you start letting government tell you what's true and what is fake, you're on a very slippery slope and the bottom of that slope isn't somewhere anyone wants to be.
