Hi, I just joined and need your help! I tried Malwarebytes and while it did locate malware to remove, it also messed with the startup function of my computer. Maybe it was also interacting with the Norton Internet Security software on my computer, who knows. But once I uninstalled MBAM, no more startup issues occured.

So! I need a recommendation on the best (hopefully free!) alternative to MBAM that also won't interfere with Norton software.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't know too much about it but you can use these freeware

RE: Recommendation needed

Hello and welcome.

For recommendations and feedback, you can post your security set-up here.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a great free on-demand scanner, the Pro paid version contains a few more useful features with real-time protection.

Were you using the Free or Pro version of Malwarebytes, when you encountered issues with your start-up?

I might imagine it MBAM had some conflict with Norton. Was it the pro version with the real time protection enabled? If so try the free version.MBAM free is a great on demand scaner

Quick question : At the final installation screen did you remember to uncheck Enable free trial for Malwarebytes Anti-malware PRO ?
Like the others already said Malwarebytes Free won't run in real time and so it cannot cause any system impact.

As far as Recommendation needed -- best removal software OTHER than Malwarebytes ... Here are my recommendations:

Malware - On-demand scanner
1. Rootkits - HitmanPro + Kaspersky TDSSKiller
2. Rogue Software - Malwarebytes + Emsisoft Emergecy Kit
3. Adware and other types of malware - ESET Online Scanner + Kapsersky Virus Removal Tool

Were you using the trial of Malwarebytes? Malwarebytes will run in the background if you, have the Pro version, or, are testing the Trial Version. You have 14 days with the trial version. At the end you can purchase the license or you can end trial and go back to the free version. Only the Pro and trial have the real-time.

Compatibility with Norton. These instructions are outdated but will give you the main idea. Here
Credits to the Malwarebytes Forums

The lifetime license for Malwarebytes Pro is $25 but if you want a free real-time solution then go for Kingsoft Antvirus.

TDSS KILLER:

EDIT: Actually Bitdefender simply scans but won't remove without payment. I am not sure about ESET online scanner and Emsisoft online scanner. I know Dr. Web and TDSS Killer will remove malware without payment.

Jack, I don't recall seeing the three options presented in your screenshot. But to be certain, I went directly to the Malwarebytes website and downloaded the free version again and reinstalled it. However, I must be in their system because no final installation screen with those options came up. In addition, the software installed as the Trial Version with 13 days left - originally I installed MBAM two days ago.

However, I think I've found a work-around until the Trial runs out. Under the "Protection" tab I disabled filesystem protection and malicious website blocking. That pretty much kills any real time scanning, I believe -- at least, I've not had any issues with startup since doing so. The only down side is the I have to repeat the disabling of those two functions after each startup.

Thanks again for your help. If this doesn't work, I'll try one of the other tools mentioned here.

Your thoughts were right on the money. I reinstalled the free version, but because of the previous install it is running as the trial version with 13 days left. As I mentioned in another reply here, upon each startup I am disabling the filesystem protection and website blocking under the "Protection" tab as a work-around. Hopefully that will work until the trial version runs out.

MBAM does have better capability of removal feature so its really good to be stayed on the system.

Also other members posted the famous and well known tools that can ensure the cleanliness of the system.

Make sure that realtime protection will be take care by your current AV.

emisoft antimalware free is a good second opinion scanner also , may give that a run , or if you like , you can do an online scan with asquared online scanner found here :
