I know my security isn't great, but I scan most things I download. I use a vm to open anything I'm not too sure about.

I'm waiting for the ribbing, so don't hold back...:)

Your config is good and simple, but why your risk is high?

Do you have any backup solution? browser addons?

Hi, I rate my risk as being high, because I don't know any better. So, this lack of knowledge to me represents a risk.

As for a back up - does a previous restore point count?

I don't have browser add ons (that I know about).

Unless you go to crack/warez/hacking/porn/wallpaper sites, you can set your risk level at low or medium.

unluckily , no ! in case of malware infections or HDD issue, you might loose your system & datas.

i suggest you to install real backup imaging softwares like :

- Macrium reflect
- Paragon

Both are free, you will make a backup image that will be stored on another HDD/computer/DVD

I don't have browser add ons (that I know about).

I will suggest :

- Lastpass (save your websites passwords in a encrypted vault on a server and enable you to retrieve them from any browser that has this addon)

- VTchromizer : allow you to upload url/files/executables then check them under 40 antivirus engines if they are malicious or not

Ones that I suggest as browser addons are, Lastpass, WOT (Web of Trust), Adblock Plus, Ghostery. Plus if you get the backup options that Umbra Corp. suggested then you should be all set.

Also with Avast, you have all settings left on default, or high or?

I would recommend sandboxie, browse in a sandbox and you would have no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for your wonderful information I will have to try them all out.

I like when she says she uses a VM to open things first: reminds me of myself:)

Have you tried Toolwiz Timefreeze? Its an awesome program that when its activated and tested an application your aren't sure the virtualization will be affect not the original one.

A virus attack your computer once its entered on "Shadow Mode" it will range only for that and when its cleared all changes were undo. :)

I haven't tried that one - primarily because I didn't know it existed, but I'll certainly take a look at it.

Thank you for recommending it.;)
