At minimum, you should be able to create TWO forms of recovery using the built-in features of Windows 7 Backup and Recovery (Control Panel).
Create a System Repair disc: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/create-a-system-repair-disc
Create a System Image disc: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/back-up-programs-system-settings-files#1TC=windows-7
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/what-is-a-system-image

If you wish to venture further for better flexibility, some members have already listed some third-party software for the job.

As for free imaging backup software I would add Macrium Reflect to the above mentioned. Personally I have good impression of Clonezilla, Paragon and Macrium.

And for data backup to external HD I like PureSync and SyncBackFree (2BrightSparks). Now I use PureSync in mirror mode.

A good idea is to use cloud storages like:
Google Drive - up to 15 GB free atm
Microsoft SkyDrive - up to 7 GB free atm
ADrive - 50 GB free though AFAIK its freemium is not so convenient and reliable as others.

Thank you for the info Solarlynx! :) You're right, I will backup some of the important files to cloud storages. :)

Cheers! :)

Thank you for the heads-up Koroke San! I will do that now, and I was nearly backing them up without encryption :)

Don't trust any "cloud" storage or cloud related stuff. just encrypt & be safe & be sure never decrypt ur files in cloud :D

How Wuala uses technology for it's Cloud Storage, with servers based on Switzerland, Germany and France.

You could also use Boxcryptor (Cloud Encryption) software that supports many online cloud storage solutions - current count 22 providers including the common; Google Drive, Wuala, SkyDrive, Dropbox, Ubuntu One.
See more: https://www.boxcryptor.com/en/provider

If you wish to transfer files from PC to PC, but unable to reach the second PC, you could try out BitTorrent Sync (beta). Also posted here, http://malwaretips.com/threads/bittorrent-sync.15422/
Post on TNW, in November 2013, more than 30 Petabytes had been transferred by over 1 million active users.
