Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, has announced that Telegram Premium will launch this month. There has been speculation of a premium tier for a while, but now it’s confirmed. Features that are free on Telegram now will stay free but those who pay for premium will get additional features, higher speeds, and more resources.

A few days ago, Neowin reported on some of the features that would be in Telegram Premium. These include a 4 GB file sharing limit, support for more symbols in the bio, faster download speeds, transcription of voice messages, premium stickers, a profile badge, advanced chat management, and more. All this will reportedly cost $4.99 per month but the firm hasn’t confirmed this just yet.

Telegram has officially launched its premium subscription. Telegram Premium will serve as a source of additional revenue for the service, offering several bonuses for those who need to get the most of the messenger.

All the existing features of Telegram will remain free of charge for all users, and future updates will keep supplying new capabilities. Those willing to support Telegram by purchasing the subscription for $4.99/mo will receive several neat bonuses and exclusive features that include the following: [...]
Telegram Premium is available in version 8.8, which is now live on all platforms. Note that the subscription price may differ depending on your country or region.

The subscription is not the only change in Telegram 8.8. The latest version also packs many improvements and new features available for all users. For example, you can now send a join request into a public group, create an animated profile picture on macOS, and enjoy smoother animations on iPhones and iPads with ProMotion displays. Telegram says version 8.8 also brings more than 100 various fixes and optimizations.

You can learn more about the latest Telegram update and Telegram Premium in the official release notes.

Opinion about Telegram Premium

Is it worth paying $4.99 for a monthly subscription of Telegram Premium?

The personalization features offered in the premium tier appear to be fluff. The Chat management and folders seem nice, but the most interesting benefits in the paid plan are the higher file upload limit and the faster download speeds. I've shared files around 1GB files a few times after compressing them using 7-zip, those were the biggest files I sent through the service. The upload and download speeds are acceptable, I'm not sure how the new "faster download speeds" are going to be.

That said, if you're someone who uploads a lot of files and uses Telegram as a backup service due to its unlimited storage space, then the premium tier maybe worth looking into. It's good to see that existing features have not been paywalled by the instant messenger, which now boasts 700 million active users.
