Earlier this year we asked you if your desk is hygge enough, inviting you to browse the web from our hygge desks placed in some of Norway’s most epic locations. The idea was for you to learn about the true meaning of hygge in Norwegian culture and come away inspired to embrace its tenets in your everyday life. You can check out the video we made about it here:
A great many of you were keen to do just that, as we received over 35,000 applications from all over the world: 216 countries and territories to be precise, so literally everywhere! In the end, ten lucky winners packed their bags – laptop included – and set off to browse with Opera from the most idyllic places on earth.
Let’s see what our lucky winners have to say about their hygge experience!
“We were overwhelmed by the beauty of the cabin, the views, and the natural surroundings. The biggest difference with our life back home was that it was so spacious – there was a much slower pace to life and we barely saw any people (we counted: including our trip to the supermarket, we saw a total of 30 people in that week).”
Mike and Eline, if you managed to see no more than 30 people during that week and appreciated it, then you really have managed to understand the core principles of the Norwegian hygge. We are proud of you!
We are also very glad that you could empty your minds and browse in a hygge way!
We’re also so happy for you that you were able to experience the beauty of the Northern Lights! They are, indeed, very hygge.
Thank you so much, Mike and Eline, for your participation and for browsing the web with us from Norway.
Violetta sent us some stunning images from Lofoten and we truly believe that they convey what hygge should look and feel like:
If that’s not hygge, then what is?
“Words can’t quite capture it, so I’m sharing a hygge-inspired selection instead – my photographer’s and artist’s eyes say it better
Thank you for the experience, the support, and the warm welcome!”
Thanks for the pictures, Violetta – you’re most definitely right: words can’t quite capture it!
Another one of our guests, Elizabeth, found herself in a place where she could reflect upon life and feel totally at peace:
“I felt truly alone, and it definitely freaked me out – I still have no idea if bears are a thing here. But the next morning I stepped outside, skied through a quiet snow-covered mountain, and something shifted. After a couple days, staring up at the stars at night, I’ve never felt so completely at peace. It made me realize how much of the anxiety I blame on the outside world comes from within me.”
We’re glad that you could experience hygge in such a deep and introspective way – that’s definitely the point of it! We’re also glad that you could come and browse the web from such an amazing place, and in such a peaceful state of mind.
Elizabeth made a whole series of videos and posts about her hygge experience on Instagram, so if you would like to see how she experienced it, you can find her as @wanderlizz.
When you’re a mother of three and can’t really catch a break from all the responsibilities of life, a hygge desk getaway might seem especially appealing. That was certainly the case with Mel and her partner, who came all the way from Brazil to enjoy the snow, the beach, and even the northern lights in Bodø.
Mel said, “As parents of three really young kids (all under 5 years old) who have been working from home since before the pandemic, we honestly don’t have a lot of down time – sometimes it’s hard to hear our own thoughts. So the experience of having a week to be fully present and cozy in a gorgeous setting – working and at the same time enjoying such a deep connection to nature – was something that we’ll cherish forever.”
We’re happy that you could enjoy this opportunity, and we hope that you can bring back some of these hygge vibes to your home and your work. It was a pleasure to have you in Norway!
When your country issues a volcanic alert due to an eruption just as you’re boarding a plane to Norway, it’s definitely a sign that it’s a good time to get out. That’s exactly what happened to Joana and Daphyd as they were starting their hygge getaway. It can’t be too bad to leave the volcano madness for the peace and quiet of this fjord:
This is the kind of place where you could focus and relax at the same time, just like Joana: “As a Lead Industrial Designer of bionic medical devices I didn’t expect to feel so focused and productive, but I did. And yes, my coworkers were definitely jealous of my setup in every meeting.”
Imagine being in a meeting with this view out of your window – that’s most definitely hygge!
Finally, we can wrap this up by quoting Joana herself, who has found the true meaning of hygge in Bodø: “After months of stress and a fast-paced rhythm juggling both design and drone work, this trip gently reminded me to slow down. To breathe. To just be. From fjord ferries to spotting reindeer and even a moose on our way to Bodø… this was a work trip I’ll never forget. And I’m taking this as inspiration to gift myself moments like this more often.”
Thank you to all of our winners for sharing their amazing hygge experiences in Norway with us, and a big thanks to all of you who took the time to enter the contest. Stay on the lookout for fun new competitions from our side, and keep browsing in a hygge way! Whether you’re at home or on the go, we’ve got a browser ready for you – download it here.
