Introducing The Living Mind
I am excited to announce a new project I have started developing:THE LIVING MIND
A Walk-Through Artificial Brain
Watch intelligence come to life.Imagine entering a science museum and standing beneath an enormous brain-shaped computer suspended above you.
Inside it are physical analog neurons, adjustable synapses, electronic circuits, and illuminated optical axons. The network maintains a gentle baseline pattern of activity, but when a visitor asks a question using a microphone or keyboard, the entire brain awakens.
Neurons accumulate electrical state, reach their firing thresholds, and send pulses of light through the network while a conversational AI interprets and answers the question.
This will not simply be an LED animation shaped like a brain.
The goal is to build a genuine physical neural computer whose real analog activity can be observed as it happens. The conversational AI and physical network will perform different but connected roles, allowing visitors to see normally invisible computation unfold around them.
Surrounding the brain will be The Path to Intelligence, an interactive historical timeline beginning with the foundations of programmable computing and continuing through:

Visitors will also be able to conduct their own experiments:
• Build and train a Perceptron
• Excite or inhibit a physical neuron
• Create a memory using recurrent connections
• Follow a signal through the network
• Slow down and replay real neural activity
• Remove connections and observe what changes
• Compare biological and artificial responses
• Race the machine in pattern-recognition challenges
• Take home a visualization of the activity they created
The first Living Mind is currently being envisioned for a science museum in Kansas City, where it could serve as a technological companion to Science City’s existing biological brain exhibit:
The Amazing Brain explores intelligence created by nature.
The Living Mind explores intelligence created by people.
The long-term goal is to create approximately 20 to 40 Living Mind installations in science museums around the world.

There are countless ways to interact with artificial intelligence on a screen. I want to create a place where people can stand beneath a physical neural network, watch its signals move, and experience computation happening around them.
