Microsoft is once again shifting things around and making things confusing for users of its products. After the Microsoft Teams debacle, it is now renaming the Remote Desktop app to the Windows app on some platforms.

On Windows, it is launching the Windows App without replacing classic remote desktop apps, at least for now it seems.

What is the Windows App? Microsoft says it is the "gateway to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and remote PCs". The app is available for different devices, including Windows, macOS, and iOS, as well as a web browser version.

The app is in preview right now. Mac OS and iOS users who run the classic Microsoft Remote Desktop app on their devices get a banner at the top that informs them about the change of name. It reads: "In an upcoming update for Remote Desktop the client will have a new name, Windows App!".

Microsoft published a getting started support page. There Microsoft does not provide an explanation for the name change. It does, however, list several of the application's features that are designed to enhance the remote experience.

One step closer to Windows 365 Cloud PC. Anyway, it is about time MS updated the remote desktop app, the new GUI looks great and hopefully it will be even usable.
Sadly yes. The future is no more ownership. No more Xbox or PS5 or PC gaming on physical media or any media that you own. It's all terminal clients connected to the cloud.

Say goodbye to Microsoft's Remote Desktop app and get ready to move to the Windows App
Microsoft will end support for its Remote Desktop app on May 27, 2025. After that date, the app will no longer be usable or available for download.

But users will not be left out in the cold. They'll just have to transition to the Windows App, which has been around since last September.

The Windows App allows people to access Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Remote PCs.

Microsoft explains the benefits of the Windows App over the Remote Desktop app in a Tech Community post:
  • Unified access to multiple Windows services, including Cloud PCs and virtual desktops from a single, streamlined interface.
  • Customizable home screens, multimonitor support, and dynamic display resolutions.

RDP just needs to die.

The only useful thing for it today is for fraud/proxy hopping and using it as an attack vector for entry to conduct ransomware attacks(event hat has died down). Or are they keeping the 5 people happy who still use RDP to manage their Windows Server box?

Even Windows has SSH in built now.

more and more percentage of silicon is getting to ai , data centers etc
it's just not profitable for companies to make consumer products and tsmc is booked for years
Seems like consumers will have to rent access to get next gen computing so yes it's not a conspiracy we indeed are getting closer to cloud PCs being a mainstream computation platform for everything to connect to
Obviously that has both advantages and disadvantages but with the scale businesses have they technically could one day make it more affordable then anything a consumer could have gotten but only if the market will be competitive and at large scale at the same time
