Trovi Removal Instructions don't work.

On my new Lenovo laptop (Win 10), I read the conditions carefully and found that Trovi.com was was required to accept. All I have read re Trovi has been negative, and I want it off my machine.

I've followed malwaretips.com's removal instructions, but none of the recommended scans can identify any Trovi threats. I know it could be called "Search Protector," but nothing shows under that name. Hitmanpro has no Win10 version.

HELP! Am I worrying needlessly or should I pursue this?

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:
  • At the top of your post, please click on the "Watch thread" button and make sure to check Watch this thread...and receive email notifications. This will send an email to you as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing me to solve your problem faster.
  • Please do not install any new software during the cleaning process other than the tools I provide for you. This can hinder the cleaning process. Please do not perform System Restore or any other restore.
  • Instructions I give to you are very simple and made for complete beginner to follow. That's why you need to read through my instructions carefully and completely before executing them.
  • Please do not run any tools other than the ones I ask you to, when I ask you to. Some of these tools can be very dangerous if used improperly. Also, if you use a tool that I have not requested you use, it can cause false positives, thereby delaying the complete cleaning of your machine.
  • All tools we use here are completely clean and do not contain any malware. If your antivirus detects them as malicious, please disable your antivirus and then continue.
  • If during the process you run across anything that is not in my instructions, please stop and ask. If any tool is running too much time (few hours), please stop and inform me.
  • I visit forum several times at day, making sure to respond to everyone's topic as fast as possible. But bear in mind that I have private life like everyone and I cannot be here 24/7. So please be patient with me. Also, some infections require less, and some more time to be removed completely, so bear this in mind and be patient.
  • Please stay with me until the end of all steps and procedures and I declare your system clean. Just because there is a lack of symptoms does not indicate a clean machine. If you solved your problem yourself, set aside two minutes to let me know.
  • Please attach all report using
    fjqb1h.png
button below. Doing this, you make it easier for me to analyze and fix your problem.

  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay for the repair.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine.

Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on
    FRST.gif
    icon and select
    RunAsAdmin.jpg
Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

THE,

FYI - I am following this thread of emails on another computer in case something happens on the Lenovo machine and I can't get to this email thread. I am conducting the scans only on the Lenovo machine in question.

You tell me to, "Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:" I see no "attached fixlist.text file" attached to your message. When I do a search for "fixlist.txt" I find references to other people, not me.

It appears that I am not understanding your instructions.

THE,

I was confused by working in two places: the email from you and the MalwareTips help site.

My Lenovo is rebooting right now and I will send the report in a minute.

I haven't really used this computer enough to experience many problems. The only activity I've had on it has been to remove McAffee, install Avast, and use MS Edge to communicate with you and download the files I've been asked to.

I'm new to Windows10 so I might have done something that triggered the installation of Chrome by getting email, but I've tried to avoid using any browser but Edge (with the idea that if it gets infected but the other browsers are clean, I could do without Edge). I remember reading somewhere that Trovi isn't activated until you use Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox. Only Chrome and Edge are installed and I don't remember installing Chrome myself.

Have you seen any evidence that Trovi is active on my computer in the logs I've sent?

I took screenshots on my phone of the Lenovo software agreement before I clicked to accept, mainly because it said that Trovi was included in with the Lenovo software. That is the only reason I suspect that Trovi is even on my machine. If sending you copies of the screenshots that refer to Trovi would help, let me know.

The articles you pointed me to are definitely interesting. It seems that this Superfish malware is different than many because it produces its own certificate. Still, none of the scans on my PC have produced any evidence of Superfish. The fiasco it caused was in early 2015, a year + from when I bought mine (early Jan. 2016).

It seems entirely possible that Lenovo is allowing/promoting a different type of infection now (Trovi) that is spelled out in their terms of agreement and cannot be rejected. Hell, we can't even find it on my PC!

So, bottomline, it looks like you can't help me with this Trovi problem. Please don't take this as I'm angry because I appreciate everything you have given me in the attempt to track this stuff down. Still, I am going to copy you with the screenshots from the Lenovo agreement that refer to Trovi. Perhaps you can interpret it in a different way, other than seeing some decidedly underhanded motives behind it all.

Have you seen signs of Trovi yourself? Something like advertisements, changed search engine on your browsers, unwanted pop-ups or similar?

Like I said yesterday, I have not been using the browsers except to use Edge to download Avast and the malware scanware you have told me to download and run. I don't want to get anything infected if I can avoid it. I've already spent an annoying amount of time trying to get rid of it.

Do you think that I need to use other browsers a bit to see if Trovi pops up its head with the unwanted ads, etc? Seems like waving a flag, saying "Here I am! Come do your worst cuz I can't see you."

You should try other browsers, but like I said I didn't spot signs of Trovi in your system, at lease not as something active. Maybe it is bundled only with Lenovo software while using it.
