Operating System
Windows 7
Infection date and initial symptoms
5 days ago. i noticed laptop works really slow and i found a lot of dllhost.exe processes running and using up to 100% of memory.
Current issues and symptoms
internet traffic goes up and down and something saves random files in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\AppData\Local directories.
Steps taken in order to remove the infection
after using combofix i have no more issues with dllhost.exe processes, so laptop works good and not extremely slow like before. but it has something to be wrong still because i still have two explorer.exe running. using AnVir Task Manager when i close one of them it runs again in like 10 seconds. AnVir says both processes are associated to C:\Windows\explorer.exe file. I scaned my laptop with AVG Free 2013, TDSSKiller and Malwarebytes and they found nothing

so the problem is that one of them uses a lot memory and internet traffic. im pretty sure something is hiding behind this process because it uses 100000 to 600000 K of memory or even more and if i'm online something keeps downloading different files to my C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\AppData\Local\... directories.

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:
  • At the top of your post, please click on the "Watch thread" button and make sure to check Watch this thread...and receive email notifications. This will send an email to you as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing me to solve your problem faster.
  • Please do not install any new software during the cleaning process other than the tools I provide for you. This can hinder the cleaning process. Please do not perform System Restore or any other restore.
  • Instructions I give to you are very simple and made for complete beginner to follow. That's why you need to read through my instructions carefully and completely before executing them.
  • Please do not run any tools other than the ones I ask you to, when I ask you to. Some of these tools can be very dangerous if used improperly. Also, if you use a tool that I have not requested you use, it can cause false positives, thereby delaying the complete cleaning of your machine.
  • All tools we use here are completely clean and do not contain any malware. If your antivirus detects them as malicious, please disable your antivirus and then continue.
  • If during the process you run across anything that is not in my instructions, please stop and ask. If any tool is running too much time (few hours), please stop and inform me.
  • I visit forum several times at day, making sure to respond to everyone's topic as fast as possible. But bear in mind that I have private life like everyone and I cannot be here 24/7. So please be patient with me. Also, some infections require less, and some more time to be removed completely, so bear this in mind and be patient.
  • Please stay with me until the end of all steps and procedures and I declare your system clean. Just because there is a lack of symptoms does not indicate a clean machine. If you solved your problem yourself, set aside two minutes to let me know.
  • Please attach all report using
button below. Doing this, you make it easier for me to analyze and fix your problem.

  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

Why did you use ComboFix tool? How many times we need to warn people not to use ComboFix tool on you own?! I am now considering whether to help you or not?

WARNING!!! ComboFix is complex and very powerfull tool, that is able to destroy your system completely if run in wrong hands. It is not intended for everyday use. It should be run only when asked and under guidance by trained malware removal expert. Don't run ComboFix on your own!!!

I've tried all the other tools and they didn't help at all. That's why i did ComboFix, i've read about it a lot before and i know it's powerfull but i decided to try. And i was doing everything very carefully following the instructions. And it solved my issue about lots of dllhost.exe processes but not explorer.exe problem. I see now i should've not done it by myself. 5 minutes ago this process reached 3,3 GB on RAM so i could barely move my mouse. i killed it with AnVir but its in system again. I really need your help and would be really thankful.

Its still the same. The second explorer.exe process (with no owner in task manager) leaks memory (100mb to 3,2gb).

I just installed the latest Windows updates. Still the same, the process is in task manager. It does not leak that much memory lately but it's not normal.

After Wingows updates i got a couple of new problems:
1. Catalyst Control Center keeps crashing after like one minute of working. I get the message about it stops working after every reboot or after i run it manually.
2. One of the Windows updates i've installed was IE11. Now Mozilla Firefox works slow and i keep getting messages about shockwave flash plugin crashes and i cant play any video. IE11 and Chrome seem working fine though.
3. When i start Google Chrome there are 4 chrome.exe *32 processes run in task manager. Maybe it is fine i never used chrome before but seems weird to me.

Open Command Prompt and type this command:

sfc /scannow

Once it finished, type this command:

chkdsk c: /r

Than probably some application is making the problem. May I ask if you have some cracked application. Try removing torrent applications and let me know if it helped.
