Ubuntu 26.10 has been released, with a faster way to tile windows, passkey sign-in at the login screen and a full set of Rust-based core utilities.

The newest interim release, supported for the next 9 months, ships GNOME 51, Mesa 26.2 and the Linux 7.3 kernel. Plus, a more capable App Center, new desktop ISOs for RISC-V hardware and expanded TPM-backed full-disk encryption.

Sounds good to me, thank you, Ubuntu 26. :) Upcoming Dec. Mint 27 update.

Core System & Kernel

• Kernel 7.0: Mint 27 will ship with Linux kernel 7.0 by default, inherited directly from the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS base, providing modern hardware support and performance improvements.

• Package Base & Libraries: It adopts Ubuntu 26.04's updated software libraries, toolchain, and underlying core packages.

• Live Installer: Mint adopts the live installer from LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition), offering improved support for modern firmware setups including OEM, BIOS, EFI, Secure Boot, LVM, and LUKS encryption.

Desktop & Display Server (Cinnamon)
  • Wayland Progression: Improved Wayland compatibility for the Cinnamon desktop moves Wayland from an experimental state to a viable choice, letting users select between X11 (default) and Wayland sessions at login.
  • New Apps & Tools: The release leverages the Ubuntu 26.04 base to run a heavily expanded suite of in-house XApps, including:
    • Xepub (EPUB ebook reader)
    • Clockenstein (calendar application)
    • Clocks (Android-inspired alarm manager)
    • Superlight (system monitor)
    • Unfold (7zip-powered archive manager)
    • Velocity (terminal emulator inspired by Ghostty and Ptyxis)
    • Redesigned Thingy (Library) app and an updated System Administration tool with built-in kernel management
