VeraCrypt 1.25, a new version of the open source cross-platform encryption software, is now available. The new version is the first release of the application for over a year; the last release dates back to November 2020 when a hot fix update for Mac OS X Big Sur was released.

VeraCrypt 1.25 is not yet listed as a download on the official project website, but downloads are available on the project's SourceForge project page. Note that the GitHub repo has not been updated yet as well.

The new version of VeraCrypt updates any existing version that is installed on the system. The system needs to be restarted after a successful installation, as the new driver needs to be loaded during system start.
VeraCrypt 1.25 is a major new version that changes system requirements significantly. The new version of the encryption software adds support for Windows on ARM64, Apple Silicon M1 and OpenBSD, but it also removes support for the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 8.1
  • Mac OS 10.7
  • Mac OS 10.8
The developers reveal that the dropping of support for the listed Windows versions was required because of "new requirements for driver code signing". No reasoning was provided for the dropping of support for Mac OS 10.7 and 10.8.

VeraCrypt 1.25 includes support for an MSI installler that administrators may utilize for silent mode deployments on supported Windows systems. The caveat is that the MSI installer can't be used if the system partition is encrypted with VeraCrypt.

The Windows version of VeraCrypt has seen several other improvements. The new version blocks Windows from resizing an encrypted system partition, addresses a memory leak in the EFI bootloader, fixes a potential memory corruption in the driver, clears a bootParams variable that may contain sensitive information, and includes a workaround for an issue that occurs during Windows Feature updates (maybe the automatic repair issue caused by the bootloader?)

The new version of VeraCrypt for Mac OS X introduces support for Apple's new Silicon M1 hardware, but it does drop support for the two older versions of Mac OS X, Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8). The Mac version adds user interface language support using installed XML files.

Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD versions have seen a few fixes for the most part.

You can check out the full changelog of VeraCrypt 1.25 here.

VeraCrypt 1.25.7 update reintroduces support for Windows Vista, 7 and 8 systems

VeraCrypt 1.25.7 brings back support for Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The team notes that certain patches need to be installed on Windows 7 and Vista devices to get the latest version of VeraCrypt installed on these devices.

Windows 7 support requires that either KB3033929 or KB4474419 is installed.

KB3033929 is a security update that Microsoft released on September 3, 2015.
KB4474419 is the SHA-2 code signing support update.

Windows Vista support requires that either KB4039648 or KB4474419 is installed.

With these patches installed, VeraCrypt 1.25.7 installs fine on the three operating system versions.

The new version introduces another useful option that is specific to Windows machines. Three Registry options have been added that may be used to tune the performance "for SSD disks and having better stability under heavy load". [...]

  • All OSes:
    • Update translations (Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Turkish).
  • Windows:
    • Make MSI installer compatible with system encryption.
    • Set minimum support for MSI installation to Windows 7.
    • Fix failure to create Traveler Disk when VeraCrypt is installed using MSI.
    • Don't cache the outer volume password when mounting with hidden volume protection if wrong hidden volume password was specified.
    • Reduce the size of EXE installers by almost 50% by using LZMA compression instead of DEFLATE.
    • Fix double-clicking mounted drive in VeraCrypt UI not working in some special Windows configurations.
    • Add registry key to fix BSOD during shutdown/reboot on some machines when using system encryption.
      • Under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\veracrypt", create a REG_DWORD value named "VeraCryptEraseKeysShutdown".
      • Setting this registry value to 0 disables erasing system encryption keys which is the cause of BSOD during shutdown on some machines.
  • Linux:
    • Fix hidden volume settings not correctly displayed when enabling hidden volume protection in mount options window.
    • Fix generic Linux installer overwriting /usr/sbin if it is a symlink.
    • Fix crash when building with _GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS defined.
    • Enable building from source without AES-NI support.
  • MacOSX:
    • Fix hidden volume settings not correctly displayed when enabling hidden volume protection in mount options window.

VeraCrypt 1.25.9 includes fixes for the three supported operating systems Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Most changes apply only to the Windows version, including a fix for a BSOD that could happen on shutdown.
