unclear why "not for long"? -- I've been using it continuously for at least a decade with no malware, few false positives. Website says "install & forget" and that has been my experience 99.9% of time. But agree about about OFF name but if you install & forget that's not much of an issue, imo.
I've been using Comodo Firewall with no antivirus or infection for nearly two decades now. I prefer it for its protection, usability, features, and configurations, and it runs light on the system. If not Comodo, I would use @Andy Ful's tools or CyberLock.

@rashmi CL/VS doesn't work like Comodo, you can whitelist folder and even whitelist the vendor.
Does whitelisting the folder or vendor allow the program's updates or new versions with no alerts?

I cannot exactly answer your question, but my experience most apps will update without CL alert (running smart mode aggressive) Lately I've noticed some issue with firefox updates where CL is blocking them until I put CL into disable / install mode -- sorta like every firefox update is a new install... Hasn't bothered me enough to track down the reason why. this is not new to 7.87 for me, it has been happening for a few months.

Did you receive alerts for Firefox updates, or did CyberLock silently block them? I didn't see CyberLock blocking anything silently when I tested it. I might revisit CyberLock for its Custom Folder feature. Comodo's timely compatibility updates for Windows 11 major releases are unlikely. CyberLock could be a strong alternative for Comodo on the kids' system if the Custom Folder feature works for me. I prefer having CyberLock in Always ON mode with no antivirus on my system.

for me, lately CL will block the installation of firefox updates, if I forget to put CL into disable / install mode, the firefox update is blocked and I am "forced" to put CL into disable / install, then firefox updates ok. this is in win10, both Host and win10 Guests. IIRC I do not received a CL alert, just silent block.

@danb would be the best to answer that, I'm still without my laptop and I've never needed to whitelist anything apart from a couple of times a game installer/update file that's really big and VS analysis was taking a long time but that's improved a lot in recent versions.

@danb I've encountered an incompatibility between VS/CL (v7.87) and a MS Office addin, ProWritingAid (PWA).
The new Smart Firewall feature blocks PWA from connecting to the internet in order to recognize the license and to function. Smart Firewall blocks with both Recommended and Aggressive levels. Only Disabled allows PWA to function.
I didn't know and thought the addin was buggy and have been back and forth with PWA support for a few weeks until today when I tried disable Smart Firewall. Please let me know how I can provide more details.
@danb after disabling Smart Firewall, I've realized that Smart Firewall also blocked the following functions in MS Office:
- MS Office addin store (not the traditional COM addins like PWA which VS/CL also interferes with)
- O365 sync.
I don't really use those functions so did not care before. But there must be users who appreciate those functions with VS/CL enabled.

I installed CyberLock and checked the Custom Folders feature. Custom Folders don't list Program Files folders. It might be possible to achieve this using the Rules section. You can create a rule for a program's folder, but I didn't test it yet. I experimented with the Rules section for the VAi scores and will request @Shadowra to test CyberLock.

Further testing shows the "Rules" section is not effective. CyberLock seems integrally linked to the mode and security posture. Its operation relies on these configurations, irrespective of any "rules" I define. VoodooShield's older information reveals a customizable VoodooAi feature in the interface. I'm curious if it worked and @danb's reasons for its removal. I'd rather "Rules" take precedence over the default settings; that's the whole point of custom rules and advanced configurations.

@rashmi, no offense but my first thought is whether your rule and the test of it, are 100% correct? I like the fact the VS/CL is mostly default. I did have an issue with one of my primary pc about 18 to 24 months ago, and @danb helped me create 2 rules to fix my unique issue, and those rules are working here. I cannot confirm or deny your comment about Rules taking precedence over default settings or visa versa.

Creating "rules" is straightforward in CyberLock. I'm not referring to a specific item but to overriding the default protection. CyberLock's protection depends on the chosen mode and security posture. In the "rules" section, you can define the mode and security posture. If I set an "Allow/My Computer/When CyberLock is on AutoPilot/VoodooAi ≤ 89" rule, CyberLock should skip Whitelist/Signature checks, blocking only if VoodooAi ≥ 90.

I run CyberLock in Always ON/Aggressive mode, noting the VoodooAi score and Whitelist Scan verdict for each program. Reset CyberLock. The AutoPilot and security posture experiments show CyberLock adhering to those settings, rendering custom rules inactive.

thanks for restating.... but somewhere after the beginning of your comment, I get "lost" somewhere in the middle before I get to your conclusion. (probably me)

I've contacted Dan directly. It was MS Word that was blocked and there is a rule by Smart Firewall to block Word (as well as other MS Office programs). So I disabled that rule and everything works as normal.
While I understand the reason behind that, it will cause issues for novice users like me. I think there can be some middle ground.

Mail from @danb : CyberLock 7.88
Hey Guys!

Here is the latest version of CyberLock! There are just a lot of small tweaks and refinements. For example, the VoodooAi results in Settings sorts correctly now. We also added a button to the WhitelistCloud panel to delete an item. About 15 or so little things like that.

This version is released to the public, but the auto update is not active for this version yet, but it will be in about a week or so.

CyberLock 7.88

Thank you guys,

Have a great week!

@danb, How about an "Exclusion" section in CyberLock to exclude programs from CyberLock's protection? And, can you add an "informational alert" setting that would simply show alerts for blocked items with no allow/block functions? If enabled, it should also work for the "Silent" security posture. The setting would be helpful to let the average users know that CyberLock or admin settings blocked the program.

You already get notified of blocks. I believe it's one of the options in the settings.
You can already use Custom Folders or manually whitelist items but perhaps I'm not understanding what feature your after.

I meant an "informational" alert for the item blocked; you can only close the informational alert, i.e., it won't have or show allow/block options. I have previously, too, mentioned to you that "custom folders" don't show "program files" folders.

I prefer alerts instead of silent blockings. Does CyberLock block things silently? Have you encountered silent blockings with CyberLock before? According to @danb's posts, CyberLock has hardened rules for vulnerable processes. Do these rules result in silent blockings in CyberLock? I currently use Comodo Firewall, but I dislike its automatic containment of unrecognized files. Unlike Comodo Cloud Antivirus, Comodo Firewall does not prompt with an "ask" alert for auto-containment. Therefore, I am considering switching to CyberLock. I want to make sure that CyberLock does not silently block things.
