NSA, CIA, Equation group, Kaspersky...they are all actors involved in this context, all spy on all, and all accuse everyone but no one admits their own responsibility...obvious otherwise that espionage would be :p
But this time, who has the smoking gun?

Only the US government could be so stupid as to use Kaspersky products in sensitive departments.
Every other nation in the world knows not to trust their enemies.

At least for the DOD (Department of Defense) they have a contract with McAfee. So US defenses are at least safe from Russian hands if they are messing around.

Security vendor Kaspersky has denied reports it helped the Russian government gain access to sensitive US systems, claiming it has "never" engaged with any government on cyber espionage.

Kaspersky was prompted to make the public statement following a Buzzfeed report that cited unnamed US intelligence officials expressing concern over the Russian infosec company's access to American government systems.

The report said intelligence agency officials wants the US government's General Services Administration (GSA) to work out how long Kaspersky security products have been approved for use by American government agencies.

The officials conceded they had not seen any evidence linking Kaspersky to the Kremlin, but said the concerns stemmed from broader worries about Russia's involvement in US affairs.

“As a private company, Kaspersky Lab has no ties to any government, and the company has never helped, nor will help, any government in the world with its cyber espionage efforts," the company said in response.

Kaspersky pointed out that over the past decade, it had discovered and made public several "Russian-speaking cyber espionage campaigns, which is more than any other US-based company".

The security vendor claimed its users have full control over the telemetry data shared by its products and can disable the feature at any time. Businesses and government can also elect to use a Kaspersky product on premise to ensure the data never leaves their facilities, the company said.

Kaspersky is certified by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which has vouched for the company's encryption technologies being fully compliant with the American government's Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2.

Alongside winning direct contracts with US government agencies, Kaspersky licenses its technology for use through third-parties.

This makes it difficult to ascertain the extent of Kaspersky software in US systems, one of the officials quoted in the Buzzfeed report said.

Kaspersky products are still available on the GSA Advantage! website for agency procurement, along with those of US vendors Blue Coat Systems, Symantec, Juniper, and Trustwave.

It sure makes you wonder if to be or not to be. :p

Part of my thinks having Kaspersky signatures/AV might benefit you from some of the Russian hacker community crossover work most likely occurring to help sell units or mutual beneficial work.

No proof but some Malware spreading/corporate attacks timed with known Russian Cybercrime campaigns with source IP's in the Russian Federation/ROC IP blocks having not affecting only the Kaspersky protected PC's (work for a multi-national corp) has been seen by me more than once.

Other part of me realizes, silly Gov... You so silly.

State-sponsored espionage is a very sensitive topic. To be proven guilty can be punishable by death.

You can't point your fingers to only Kaspersky because Kaspersky isn't the only security company that produces security products to various government agencies around the world. Are you sure that all of Russian government's IT people don't do anything fishy for the USA? Are you sure that none of the Chinese government's IT people don't work for the benefit of USA intelligence? Are you sure that in the USA only Kaspersky has any ties, perceived or real, to Russia?

Russia, China, and even North Korea might even have USA spies. What would these governments, or their people, say about USA if they accuse USA for cyber-espionage, then?

But, of course, I would understand that it's common sense for any government not to employ products from companies, which have perceived or real ties from a country considered to be a "real" threat. So the USA government shouldn't even have used Kaspersky in government agencies. Imagine this: would Kim Jong Un even consider using Norton to be its cyber security partner?

It is important to note that regular folk have absolutely nothing to be concerned about. Rule of thumb is that if a person has neither any Governmental or Industrial (with a Security clearance) connection, no one really gives a flying (add curse word here) about you.

But denying K's connection to the FSB is like denying that the world is round (even forgetting about old Eugene, just google Igor Chekunov and FSB). Now this connection should come as no surprise as the Intelligence services of EVERY country have connections with home grown security companies. In the US, it isn't even much of a secret at all! https://www.iqt.org/

For some reason a quote from one of the Godfather films stays in my mind: "Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in..."

This topic is really fired up!
You know that "rule": Never talk about religion, politics, and sports with people you don't know that well. !?
We can sit and throw our theories here for days, and probably will never come to a right conclusion. Don't trust the media people. Today Kaspersky is to blame (not defending them), tomorrow it will be someone else. We're the cogs in the machine, but since we're those little pieces we can't feel the effect of it that much. Those big, like security companies, government agencies, capitalist, banks, those are the one pulling the string, making it all work, etc.
Enjoy other stuff, don't bang your head with conspiracy theories.
@Umbra Watch Blacklist! Less US propaganda than in Quantico, the same premise, better actors, kills the time well if you don't have anything better to do xD
