What's DMZ used for in a home wireless router?

As far as I understand, by using DMZ you expose all of the host computer's ports to the Internet. What's that good for?

Hardened consoles (Xbox one) can survive the DMZ. They are designed to only respond to pings from specific servers. You only need to do this if port forwarding doesn’t solve issue, or you have multiple machines on the network. Honestly there aren’t many reasons to use the DMZ, unless you are doing some advanced networking. Most anything you put in the DMZ you want to be hardened or have a firewall.
