Firefox prioritizes user privacy, offers tailored browsing experiences, and provides a flexible platform through its extensive extension library.

Given this, what is your perspective on the potential privacy risks associated with extensions?

Browser Extensions:

Permissions: How extensive are the permissions required by browser extensions? Are there risks associated with granting these permissions?

Data Collection by Extensions: Do extensions collect user data, and if so, how is it used?
Permissions: I think people should keep extensions to an absolute minimum. The only extensions I use are privacy related and open-source (uBlock Origin, Noscript, Bitwarden). I do have closed source extensions on Safari but those are single developers who have blogs and are transparent about what each permission is doing

Data collection by extensions: I think, and this is what I do, every user should research the privacy practices of an extension before installing especially if it's allowed to run on all websites and it is not well-known. If it does not have a privacy policy, assume it is collecting data and avoid.

I confermed this experience.

Using Ghostery but had to restart streaming website every few episodes so might try UBOL or swap over to Firefox.
Channel 4 On Demand is getting wiser to adblockers and I had to do a lot of mini allow rules for my UBO setup but so far the simpler options of UBOL and Ghostery haven't raised too many issues. Will try UBOL streaming catch-up telly today.

UBOL is very very good!

Appreciate the feedback. Let's expand on this.

Potential Misuses:

Selling user data: Some extensions might collect sensitive data and sell it to third parties for profit.

Malware and adware: Malicious extensions can steal personal information, inject ads, or redirect users to harmful websites.

Data mining: Extensions can gather extensive information about users' online activities for profiling or other purposes.

Important Considerations:

Privacy policy: As you stated, always read the privacy policy of an extension before installing it to understand what data is collected and how it's used.

Permissions: Be cautious about granting excessive permissions to extensions. Only allow access to the data that is strictly necessary for the extension's functionality.

Reputation: Consider the extension's developer and user reviews before installing.

Alternatives: Explore open-source or well-established extensions with transparent data practices.

To protect your privacy:

* Limit the number of extensions you install.
* Regularly review and update your extensions.
* Be mindful of the permissions you grant to extensions.

Ublock lite makes youtube videos load slow for me and runs my CPU at about 90% with Malwarebytes browser guard.

It doesn't slow down YouTube videos for me. and I have an old laptop of about 15 years with 4 GB of RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo and an SSD.

In summary between UBO and UBOL I have not found any major differences in performance or blocks at the moment.

... until you get an IP block from their servers because you want to access your vault from another location.

I have immense respect for Bitwarden but after the above happened to me and I could not access my passwords when travelling abroad, I cancelled my paid subscription and never used it again.
You should always keep an up-to-date--date backup of your password vault. I am using Dashlane and I export my password vault on a daily basis. If anything goes wrong, you have ur passwords.

You should consider using a password manager that allows you to use your own cloud such as Enpass and Buttercup.

Also there is a Bitwarden (vaultwarden) instance provided by Garuda Linux. Maybe you can give that a try.
