I went to China at the end of April 2019 for 2 weeks ,
i am not sure ExpressVPN had Lightway protocol or not at that time ?

Before this , I sent an email to ask Windscribe's customer service ,
Did Windscribe available in China ?
Customer service reply me , some user report that the IKEv2 seems works some times ,
but they can't guarantee for it .

I also ask them did Windscribe provide SSR or V2ray protocol ? and the answer is no , they don't have it .
to make sure i won't get into the dilemma of disconnection , i decide to chose a well-known VPN service providers ,
and this is why i choes ExpressVPN but not Windscrible before i went to China .

But it's a pity , ExpressVPN doesn't good like Ad says ,
the connection success rate is less than 50% , and the speed and ping are terrible ,
and i do not know what kind protocol ExpressVPN are using ,
because i can't see any description or comment on ExpressVPN's program(APP) ....

Well , this is just my little experience ~
In China there are 3 main telcos. The VPN providers are telco-dependent. You need to get the right telco for your VPN

I was in China some years back and I was using ExpressVPN and VyprVPN then. Well...........sometimes you need to change server to get the connection and this happens to both my VPNs. Just don't expect 100% connection all the time unlike in your own country.

I agree ~

When i am in China , i had try two different ISP ,
in office , we are using China Telecom(ไธญๅ›ฝ็”ตไฟก)๏ผŒ
at home , we are using China Mobile(ไธญๅ›ฝ็งปๅŠจ) .

But itโ€™s very interesting is ,
two different ISP had a big difference in the restrictions (management) of VPNs .

-----------

The following is my experience at the time,
But because it was in 2019, it may be different from the current situation.

When i am in my office , using China Telecom's broadband ,
almost all VPN can't be connect ,
such as ExpressVPNใ€Windscribe or any other VPN i know ,all failure .

However my friend's company had a branch at Singapore , they provide a private VPN for it ,
Is the only one I successfully connected to the VPN , but do not know what kind protocol they are using ,
only know they are using Cisco's program name call " Cisco AnyConnect " .

Back to my home , we are using China Mobile's broadband ,
when the time comes to 7:00 am to 6:00 pm ,
during this time , no matter which VPN provider you use ,
the VPN service is easy to connect .
The only thing to note is choice the right server , such as Japan or Hong Kong or Singapore ,
speed and Ping are better .

But the freaky thing is , when the time comes to 6:00 pm until next day's 7:00 am ,
VPN connection success rate will be greatly reduced , the VPN that was originally available no longer works at night ,
Even if the connection sometimes succeeds suddenly ,
the speed and ping was terrible , even Youtube 360p cannot be played smoothly .

So i simply gave up and went to sleep , and guess what ?
yes , I got up the next morning and then the VPN can be used normally again ~ :p

it seems China Telecom had a very strict policy limit for VPN ,
but China Mobile seems limited opening VPN for office hours .
But this is just my guess ,
after all , Chinaโ€™s internet policy often changes ,
Sometimes you can sometimes not , you never know , it depends on luck . ๐Ÿ˜Œ

I agree what he talk in the video ,
indeed just like his said , It is very common to use VPN in China,
and it's usually safe .

But why we still hear some case that some people using VPN in China ,
and arrested by law enforcement ?

I ask this questions to my China's friends , they told me ,
usually these people use VPN to do some serious illegal things ,
for example , drugs, bombs, harmful to national security ,
Or privately establish VPN services and have obvious illegal acts ,
but most people use VPN just for general use , such as visit Youtube, Google, Facebook ,
it is quite safe .

In " All Things Secured " video , he said his phone was suddenly disconnected from the internet ,
because suspected that he may be using VPN or other apps .
It never happen on me , i using China Mobile's services with VPN for whole two weeks ,
my phone had install many APPs like Skypeใ€Viberใ€Lineใ€Facebookใ€Youtubeใ€Netflixใ€etc ,
and using VPN contact all the time .
And my mobile services had never be cut off ,
but he are using China Unicom's services and living different city ,
maybe that is the different .

By the way , because China is too big ,
there are many province , some of time ,
the different province had different policy ,
even the same telcos , whether the VPN service can be used will have different results .

Back to the protocol discussion ,
after many peopleโ€™s tests , to pass the Great Firewall in China,
SSR and V2ray protocols are still had the highest success rate ,
SSR provides faster speed , v2ray provides a higher success rate but a little bit slower .

Quick question, no need to create a thread.
I have my router running NextDNS. The router has OpenVPN server. If I'm away from home and connect to the OpenVPN server with my phone, will I be using NextDns like if was at home? I don't need the NextDNS app?
