Features of the second Windows 11 Moments update

  • Windows Studio Effects is now accessible directly from the Quick Settings menu on the taskbar, provided that the device supports a neural processing unit (NPU)
  • The Search icon is restored, even on devices on which it has been disabled. Users who do not want it need to remove it again in the Taskbar preferences.
  • Quick Assist is now accessible via Settings > System > Troubleshooters and the All Apps Start Menu listing.
  • Energy Recommendations are now found under Settings > System > Power & Battery > Energy Recommendations.
  • Some visual changes to system tray icons.
  • New touch-optimized taskbar support for 2-in-1 devices. It features two modes: collapsed and expanded. Collapsed shrinks the taskbar's size to make room for apps. Expanded is the regular mode, that is also enabled automatically when a regular keyboard is disconnected. Both modes can be set via Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar beaviors.
  • Braille support improvements. Support for new braille displays is now available, and there are new braille input and output languages in Narrator.
  • Voice access is more flexible and supports interactions with additional user interface controls, according to Microsoft. Voice access support is now also available for spin controls, thumb controls and split buttons.
  • Voice scrolling enhancements, e.g., to scroll to the extreme left or right of a page.
  • AI-powered recommended content is now displayed in the Start Menu for devices that joined Azure Active Directory. Content includes information on meetings, files that a user collaborated on and more.
  • Tamil Anjal keyboard support.
Some features of the Moments 2 update are not mentioned by Microsoft in the update notes. General consensus is that the majority will make it into the stable feature drop.

The main features that Microsoft did not mention in the release notes are the following ones:
  • Option to display seconds in the taskbar clock.
  • Improved File Explorer search.
  • Widgets improvements, including the ability to use them without Microsoft account and full screen support.
  • Improved account settings with cloud storage information.
  • Snipping Tool screen recording capabilities.
  • Notepad with tabs.
There is a chance that some of these features won't make it into this update. Last minute bugs or fine-tuning may move certain features to the next Moments update instead.

Microsoft finally fixing Windows 11 file copy slowdown bug with upcoming Moment 2 update
With the upcoming Moment 2 feature update for Windows 11 22H2, expected next month, a bunch of performance upgrades and improvements, alongside features, await users. For example, AMD is beginning to release its new chipset driver meant to boost the performance of its X3D CPUs, however, the driver is yet to be publicly announced by AMD. Meanwhile, for those bothered by the file copy slowdown bug, the issue will be resolved with the upcoming Moment 2 update.

For those not aware, Microsoft opened an issue related to file copy slowdown mainly over networks, though local setups may also have been affected. Initially thought to be related to the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, a Microsoft employee later confirmed that the issue was more deep-rooted as it was related to the kernel itself.

The issue was later partly patched on the Insider channel, and additional fixes were also released around two weeks later. A couple of days back, the fix was sent out to Insiders flighting the Release Preview channel. This latest Release Preview build is essentially what becomes the Moment 2 feature update, expected to land next month. The latest Release Preview build 22621.1343 (KB5022913) changelog says:

We fixed an issue that affected copying from a network to a local drive. Copying was slower than expected for some users.

Windows 11 KB5022913 causes boot issues if using UI customization apps
Microsoft says the KB5022913 February 2023 non-security preview release is causing boot issues on Windows 11 22H2 systems due to incompatibility with some third-party UI customization apps.

In a new update to the Windows Health Dashboard, the company explained that using UI customization applications could potentially prevent Windows from starting up properly.

This is because apps that help modify Windows 11's behavior or user interface may also create issues with updates released starting today.

"After installing KB5022913 or later updates, Windows devices with some third-party UI customization apps might not start up," Microsoft said.

"These third-party apps might cause errors with explorer.exe that might repeat multiple times in a loop. The known affected third-party UI customization apps are ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack.

"These types of apps often use unsupported methods to achieve their customization and, as a result, can have unintended results on your Windows device."

Customers are advised to remove any third-party UI customization application before installing today's KB5022913 preview update to avoid encountering this issue.

The company says that affected customers running StartAllBack can update to the latest released version (v3.5.6 or newer), which might prevent these system boot problems.

For now, I have no problem with StartAllBack. I like the new task manager. I didn't understand why there was no search in it for a very long time. Finally, they added it! In the screenshot tool now you can make a video, as I understand, this is also a good thing. More noticeable and important changes I have not found for myself. :)

Here's just one example New Version of ExplorerPatcher. This may be a dead or almost dead project. Too many headaches for the dev.

Microsoft began rolling out a new feature update to Windows 11 version 22H2 yesterday. Although the update does not have an official name, it is likely what's referred to as "Moment 2" internally. It features a massive changelog with improvements to Taskbar, Search, Widgets, Task Manager, and more. You can read about all the changes in our dedicated review here.

Although this is all nice and dandy, it turns out that Microsoft has shipped buggy software to this Stable Windows 11 release, perhaps knowingly as the bug has been on the known issues list for a while. As Rafael Rivera on Twitter points out, the "Alt+F, X" shortcut is broken for the new tabbed Notepad, also available to Windows 11 Stable users via an update from the Microsoft Store.
