Microsoft has released the Windows 11 KB5014697 cumulative update with security updates, improvements, and the new Spotlight for Desktop feature that automatically changes your desktop background.

KB5014697 is a mandatory cumulative update containing the June 2022 Patch Tuesday security updates for vulnerabilities discovered in previous months.

What's new in the Windows 11 KB5014697 update

After installing today's non-security update, Windows 11 will have its build number changed to 22000.739.

The Windows 11 KB5014697 cumulative update includes approximately 35 improvements and fixes, including the new Windows Spotlight for Desktop feature.

Similar to the Windows Spotlight feature on the lock screen, Windows Spotlight for Desktop will automatically rotate different Bing backgrounds on your desktop.

"Windows spotlight on the desktop brings the world to your desktop with new background pictures. With this feature, new pictures will automatically appear as your desktop background. This feature already exists for the lock screen," explains Microsoft in their release notes.
"To turn on this feature, go to Settings > Personalization > Background > Personalize your background. Choose Windows spotlight."

Other highlighted fixes or changes are listed below:
  • Windows spotlight on the desktop brings the world to your desktop with new background pictures. With this feature, new pictures will automatically appear as your desktop background. This feature already exists for the lock screen. To turn on this feature, go to Settings > Personalization > Background > Personalize your background. Choose Windows spotlight.
  • Addresses an issue that fails to maintain the display brightness after you change the display mode.
  • Addresses an issue that causes file copying to be slower.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the rendering of the default Widgets icon on a taskbar that is aligned in the center.
  • Addresses an issue that fails to automatically give the search box input focus when you select the Start menu and start typing.
As Microsoft no longer provides complete release notes in their cumulative update bulletins, you can review the changes in the May preview release notes to see what has been fixed.

Microsoft has updated the official Windows Health Dashboard page with a new known issue in Windows. According to Microsoft, the latest cumulative updates the company released on June 14 cause problems with Wi-Fi hotspots. Upon connecting to a hotspot, Windows computers drop the connection to the Internet.

The problem affects various Windows client and server versions, such as Windows 11, 10, and even 7. Currently, the only way to bypass this bug is to disable the Wi-Fi hotspot and find another way to connect to the Internet.

After installing KB5014697, Windows devices might be unable use the Wi-Fi hotspot feature. When attempting to use the hotspot feature, the host device might lose the connection to the internet after a client device connects.
Workaround: To mitigate the issue and restore internet access on the host device, you can disable the Wi-Fi hotspot feature. For instructions, please see Use your Windows PC as a mobile hotspot.

Those in dire need to use Wi-Fi hotspot on their Windows computers can try rolling back the botched Windows update and wait for Microsoft to release a better workaround than just turning off the needed feature.

June Windows preview updates fix VPN, RDP, RRAS, and Wi-Fi issues

Redmond published three cumulative updates as part of its scheduled June 2022 monthly "C" updates to allow customers to test upcoming fixes: KB5014668 (Windows 11), KB5014665 (Windows Server 2022), and KB5014669 (Windows 10, version 1809).

However, as the company revealed on Thursday in the Windows health dashboard [1, 2, 3], the updates also address connectivity issues when using Wi-Fi hotspots after installing Windows updates released as part of the June 2022 Patch Tuesday.

"When attempting to use the hotspot feature, the host device might lose the connection to the internet after a client device connects," Microsoft said a week ago when it acknowledged the now-resolved Wi-Fi issues.

While this should fix the issues according to Microsoft's claims, the updates don't cover all affected Windows versions. Customers using newer Windows 10 releases, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 SP1, and several Windows Server versions will likely have to wait for more updates to be released during next month's Patch Tuesday or (less likely) as out-of-band updates.
