Yesterday i.e. February 29, 2024, Microsoft officially released the next major feature update for Windows 11 to public. The feature update is referred as Windows 11 Moment 5 Update, 5th Feature Drop or February 2024 update by tech enthusiasts.

Many people also consider these moment updates as service packs for Windows 11, so it can also be referred as Service Pack 5 (SP5) for Windows 11. The Moment 5 update’s KB number is KB5034848 and it changes/increases the build number of Windows 11 to 22621.3235 on 22H2 and 22631.3235 on 23H2 devices.

The last feature update i.e. Moment 4 update for Windows 11 was released on September 26, 2023 which also brought many UI changes and features to Windows 11 devices. In this article, we’ll discuss what are the new features in Moment 5 update and how to download and install it in Windows 11 devices.

KB5035942: Microsoft releases Windows 11 Moment 5 as optional update for all users
Windows 11 "Moment 5" update is now available to all users in the form of the March 2024 optional non-security update. KB5035942 (build numbers 22621.3374 and 22631.3374) is now available for download from Windows Update.

Microsoft announced the "Moment 5" update on February 29, 2024. It started with a gradual rollout for "seekers," forcing some users to enable the new features manually (see our "How to install Moment 5 update" guide to learn more). Now, the update is available to everyone willing to install the latest optional update from Windows Update.

Windows 11 Moment 5 (KB5035942) causing install issues, BSOD, black desktop screen
Microsoft began rolling out its Moment 5 feature update for Windows 11 initially at the end of February via a KB5034848 update. Microsoft labels such updates as Configuration Updates.

This past week, the update was made available to all Windows 11 users via KB5035942 as an optional update. However, several users online are reporting installation issues, and some of the affected who are managing to complete the installation and setup are further experiencing black screen issues on startup.

The problems came to our attention when we found several posts on the Microsoft Community forum with users complaining that they were having installation-related issues with the said update.

Windows 11 'Moment 5' Update is now rolling out to all users
The Windows 11 "Moment 5" Update, Microsoft's latest feature drop for its operating system, is now available for all users. Microsoft started updating all supported systems as part of the April 2024 Patch Tuesday updates, which were released today, April 9.

The "Moment 5" update was first released on February 29, 2024, for "seekers" or those willing to install Windows updates manually from the Settings app. In March, Microsoft expedited the rollout, making the "Moment 5" update available to all as the latest optional non-security update. Now, it is a mandatory update for all Windows 11 users.

A friend of mine always wants the latest versions of software. I have the funny habit of prefering to wait. When I finished study I went to Africa and had the opportunity to see the Wildebeast migration. On one day they had to cross a river in the Serengeti. There were many crocodiles waiting for a byte. I somehow feel that early adopters (version XX.zero users) are the wildebeast crossing the river first so the herd (the rest of the pack) can cross the river safely (install the new feature release without bugs). :)

I do this also with software, wait one or two days after downloading before installing. A security specialist once told me that waiting a day puts the vast majority of zero day malware on the blacklist of your AV (makes sence that o-day becomes 1-day after a day :) )
