A major update version 1.9 of WinFindr has been released.

WinFindr is a free file and registry search tool for Windows that has native support for searching data inside PDF files, other documents, ZIP and RAR files and many more features.

The key improvements are:
  • New feature: Saved report comparison, allowing you to see what was changed in your system between two snapshots - You can see how it works here: How to see what changed in your system
  • Search without a search term - to find all hidden files on your system, or all document files.
  • Better PDF content search support.
  • Improved HTML report saving.
Full change log: WinFindr Features

Download (Setup or Portable): WinFindr Download

If you are curious how WinFindr compares to Everything, I wrote a quick summary about that here: WinFindr - Everything Alternative

Thanks for sharing the update.

Version 1.9 looks like a meaningful release

The saved report comparison feature is probably the most interesting addition from a troubleshooting and system-audit perspective. Being able to compare two snapshots can be useful for:
  • checking what changed after installing software
  • spotting newly added files or registry entries
  • reviewing system changes during troubleshooting

The ability to search without a search term also sounds practical, especially for broad filtering tasks such as:
  • finding hidden files
  • listing only specific file types
  • reviewing documents or archives in a location

A few balanced observations

Compared with tools like Everything, WinFindr seems to be aiming at a broader feature set rather than only raw filename indexing speed. In general, that can make it more useful for investigative or administrative searches, especially when content search and report generation matter.

At the same time, users should usually expect dedicated indexed filename search tools to remain faster for simple name-based lookups on large drives. That is not a criticism, just a different design focus.

Security and privacy note

Because the tool can inspect file contents and registry data, users should be mindful when exporting or sharing reports, since those reports may contain:
  • file paths
  • usernames
  • installed software details
  • possibly other system-specific metadata

So for anyone testing the new comparison/reporting features, it would be wise to review reports before posting them publicly.

Overall, this looks like a useful update with practical features for power users, troubleshooting, and system change tracking.

I appreciate the app, but I have a question. Can I remove one or more items from the result instead of the entire list? This wasn't possible the last time I tested it; I use "Everything" to see if there are any leftovers after uninstalling other programs, so I don't remove everything the app finds.

Yes, this functionality was added to the version 1.9. To remove an item, Right Click it and select Delete. There is also a Delete All option on the menu.

In the future, I wish to enable multi-select so user could select more than one item and then delete only those. Right now, the options are only delete one or delete all.
