I wouldn't use it too but this payment method isn't so bad. You can pay with it without entering personal data and this is a huge plus for a VPN service!

You can just run the Tor Borwser like I do (you can deactivate the proxy of course, I have a tutorial on this in my post with my security configuration). It will block much more than this extension

Kaspersky doesn't even allow me to open the page. It intercepts and block the miner script.

Well this is not new there was a browser game that you was a miner earning bitcoins, developer put the option to keep the tab open to use your computer to mine and give you some of it.... so Thepiratebay and others was not the first one to use base crypto-miner xD

However, I haven't used Windscribe, so I really can't comment about its efficacy.

But because it's about crypto-mining, then I wouldn't ever support those who do it.
