Both BitDefender and G-Data flagged the URL, although G may be getting the flag from BD. False positives? Some other processes masquerade as auepdu.exe? DLL sideloading?

Asking BD is probably the safest thing to do?

Poor quality control reason for such bad updates triggering massive false positives.
As I always say, it is called defender for a reason.

Gen digital ones had a similar FP recently; only Kaspersky and ESET have a clean sheet on Reddit regarding FP.

Yes, I would say Kaspersky and ESET have much less FPs. That is a big thing that has put me off Bitdefender and why I am with Kaspersky.
