Google has released October Android security fixes for versions 14, 15, 16, 16 QPR2 and 17. Owners of older phones may not receive them, while supported devices can still face delays from their manufacturers.
Critical flaws make prompt updates important
Malwarebytes Labs notes that the updates address several vulnerabilities rated Critical, including flaws that could be exploited without any action from the user.Availability depends on both the Android version and the phone maker. Vendors generally test and sometimes modify Google's patches before sending them to their own devices.
Older and quarterly-updated phones may wait
The October fixes cover Android 14 and later, but roughly four in ten devices were running Android 12 or older in distribution figures reported around the previous year.Update frequency also differs by model. Samsung, for example, lists the Galaxy S22 series and several Galaxy A phones on a quarterly rather than monthly security schedule.
What Android users should do
Install the update as soon as your phone offers it. Menu wording varies, but the usual route is Settings, followed by Software update or System update, sometimes found under System or About phone.- Check for an update, then download, install and restart when prompted.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled and use current real-time anti-malware protection.
- Avoid sideloading apps from outside the normal app store unless it is genuinely necessary.
