Advice Request Antimalware core service running alongside 3rd party antivirus

Please provide comments and solutions that are helpful to the author of this topic.
In fact, since Microsoft Defender protects so well, is pre-installed, and is lightweight, I no longer find a need to download any 3rd party AV.

I've noticed that Microsoft's pre-installed software are now sufficiently good, which has led me to abandon many of the other software I used to use previously.
MSD indeed is very good; lacks two things, improving web protection (SS is not that good) and redesigning its firewall (when trying to create allow outbound rule for a program using specific ports it fails to connect).

Yes it's already a point where MS Defender is mature enough with good detection rate. When MS started with MS Security Essentials, it's not on the same level with the well known AV in the market.

I agree with you on that, but browsers these days block most threats, and by adding an ad blocker you can be more secure.

Speaking about browsers, AVG has just glitched and inserted its own certificate with Reddit.

I was using K free before AVG free; never had this issue with.
I remember discussing this in the past, you can read in this thread from this post:

the problem with this approach is that sometimes AV certificate is not up-to-date as browser own certificate.

Same here.

I have the same issue and thought it was just me.

Microsoft Defender is running in passive mode and shows up in task manager.

But periodic scanning is disabled, SAC is disabled, and I have another anti-virus registered and running.

I've tried installing other anti-virus software and Microsoft Defender is always running on this Windows 11 computer.
I've tried toggling AVG passive mode and restarting, and it doesn't change anything.
Although, I have another Windows 11 machine, and it doesn't have this problem.

Toggling AVG passive mode fortunately worked for me; if it did not work, I was going to try to reinstall, or at least repair install, of AVG.

Try this sequence.

Turn ON AVG to passive mode then restart

Then turn Off AVG passive mode then restart.
See if that works.

No luck

I tried enabling AVG passive mode, reboot, disable AVG passive mode, and reboot. Defender is still running and in passive mode

I've tried uninstalling AVG and installing Bitdefender Free. Defender still running again in passive mode

I've tried uninstalling all 3rd party antiviruses, and installing SEP. Defender still running in passive mode

It's so annoying, even with Defender in passive mode, it's still receiving definition updates and peaks up to 1 GB of memory usage during updates

Thanks for sharing that. I just bought Avast Premium cheap in an online store ($6 for one device/yr), and decided to turn on everything in App & browser control (except for Smart App Control, which cannot be turned on) and Device Security, and followed your Powershell command, and the entries are marked "False".

I found someone asking about this in one thread in the Avast forum, and he was told that the third party AV usually takes over even though the user tries to activate Windows Security features.

Are you all referring to the Defender processes? I recently used Kaspersky Standard on Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (26100.6584 build) and did not see any Defender processes listed in Task Manager.
