Today I was installing AVG IS on my sister's laptop and I found out that both "Install AVG Secure Browser" + "Make AVG Secure Browser the default browser" are ticked by default.

I really like AVG, but this is no different than a PUP. It seems I will start looking for a different solution for family devices.

I understand your concern. AVG bundles these features for enhanced security, but you always have the option to untick them during installation if you prefer not to use them. It's always about user preference.

But they are ticked by default which is never a good thing. I hate this sketchy business practice.

I understand your frustration. It's important to carefully review all settings during installation. AVG has taken this feedback from users seriously and is working on improving the user experience.

Can't you do a custom install and choose the components you need during installation? I remember back in the day when I was using Avast, this was the best way to have a lean installation without unwanted modules.
Yes that is basically what I do, but the option of AVG Secure Browser is presented on theain installer screen now.

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing it. BTW I had installed AVG on my sister's laptop 26 days ago (trial version). When I installed it today it showed I only have 4 days remaining in my trial before I activated it, so it seems AVG/Avast keep some sort of hardware ID to prevent trial abuse.
