I am not sure tbh, they do maintain a local cache which is about 50 mb. I haven’t checked how they update it.
Trend Micro does have generous writes, as everything is copied in few different places. But generally, they have one update per day.

Excluding Webroot, I think Panda got the crown here. Always updated once on and I never felt any slowdowns. Too Cloud dependent.
If I set Avast to update only once per day instead of once every 4 hours, would it make it close ot Panda regarding disk writes?
No, because the Avast database is way bigger.
Also, Avast has constant writes in their behavioural blocking database and persistent cache, whilst for Panda I’ve not managed to find TruPrevent database anywhere.

Additional restructuring, integrity checks, self protection handle management and so on can also make just a few megabytes feel heavy.

If you're not into it's realtime, just use Panda Cloud Cleaner. On demand thru cloud scanning.
That Panda Cloud Cleaner, forum mods recommended at one point to not be used because it is severely outdated.
The samples on MalwareBazaar may be ok, provided that Panda is not just fetching from them.
Lately on tests Panda is not doing too well.
The forum mod could be referring to the GUI?Other AV have the same GUI for years with their on demand scanners too.
For me, if the Sigs database are updated and in this case it's cloud scanning which in theory it should always be up-to-date, I don't see an issue especially it's only a 2nd opinion scanner.
If it's realtime protection, there is some risk there if it's outdated.
They don’t update the engine either.
Detections are not entirely cloud-based, there is still local logic behind them.
That explains the reasoning. Detection Engine being outdated is a No No.
After follow up for 14 hours, I can say Avast respect the settings.
Only one update on PC start; after 14 hours I usually get 3 updates.

It also does not respect update interval in settings; while was using long time ago, even after setting the interval to 24 hs, it kept updating according to the default setting (cannot remember if it was every 1 or 2 hrs).
Especially if you allowed/enabled the dreaded Profiles, which would change your update setting when a profile was accessed. Maybe again, they resolved that? Those issues along with others is why I won't use it again.
