How to Activate and Enable REFS File System on Windows 10

Microsoft has a new file system designed to increase data integrity, scalability and availability called the Resilient File System (ReFS). This file system has leveraged many of the NTFS file system goodies and expanded them to make it more scalable and prevent corruptions.

The final version of Windows 10 uses NTFS and Microsoft has not added any option to enable the ReFS file system in the system. Resilient File System (ReFS) is a new local file system that maximizes data availability, despite errors that would historically cause data loss or downtime. Microsoft has only added ReFS file system in Windows Server 2012 and there is no direct option to activate or enable ReFS in Windows 10.

But if you still keen to try and test ReFS on your Windows 10 system then here is the way to activate ReFS on your system.

First download REFS enabler from here.

Once you download and run Enable ReFS.reg.

Click on yes if you want to continue, then OK after that the option to format non system drive as REFS file system will be available via command line option or via Windows Explorer right click content menu for Format as shown in screenshot.

If you want to disable Refs file system in windows 10 i have attached an other file for you so just double click and disable it.

Get ISO image for Windows 10 build 9860 for a clean install
Microsoft offers Windows 10 build 9860 only via Windows Update or via the PC Settings app. It can only be installed from an existing installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9841. For users who have recently decided to install Windows 10 after build 9860 has been released, it doubles the amount of work they have to do and a huge waste of their time - installing build 9841 first via the public ISO image and then updating it with a large 2 to 3 GB download which takes forever to install and can sometimes even fail to upgrade your OS. So for those who want to perform a clean install of Windows 10 build 9860, here are the instructions on how they can build a standalone ISO image themselves and install it.

To create the ISO image for build 9860,

First, you need to get the ESD image file of Windows 10 build 9860. The actual links are as follows (via MDL):

Windows 10 x64: 9860.0.141008-2044.fbl_release_clientpro_ret_x64fre_en-us_890f9c77dfdd9d3e7e9ac46e18fa7f4dd7b105d1.esd

Windows 10 x86: 9860.0.141008-2044.fbl_release_clientpro_ret_x86fre_en-us_4268ed97873110ab801beb19b3f5016090623c7c.esd
  1. Now download the ESD Decrypter tool from HERE
  2. Extract the ESD Decrypter tool to any folder and put your ESD file in the same directory:
  3. Now right click the decrypt.cmd file and run it as administrator from the context menu.
  4. Type 4 at the command prompt to build the full ISO image:
  5. Wait for a few minutes and enjoy your ISO file!

Windows 10 setup.exe command line switches
The Windows 10 Setup program, or setup.exe which is part of the installation media, supports a set of command line arguments. Using those arguments, you can modify the behavior of Windows installation. In this article we will review command line switches available for setup.exe in Windows 10.
So, Setup.exe installs or upgrades Windows. The following command line arguments can be used to modify the behavior of Windows installation:
Code:
Switch: /auto
Parameters : Upgrade; DataOnly; Clean
Action : Automate install with migration choice for the installation.
The media setup UI and progress screens are shown by default, but are automated.
This switch also assumes the following default configurations :
EULA acceptance, Dynamic Update is enabled, telemetry collection and upload opt - in, OOBE will be skipped, PBR will be updated or created.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade

Switch : /quiet
Parameters : N /A

Action : The quiet flag will suppress any setup UX, including rollback UX

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /quiet

Switch : /pkey
Parameters : 5x5 product key

Action : Supplies setup with the specified product key.
This parameter is not necessary when upgrading with volume licensed media or media that contains a pid.txt in the sources folder.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /pkey ABC12-DEF34-GHI56-JKL78-MNP90

Switch : /showoobe
Parameters : Full; None

Action : When /showoobe is set to Full, the end user must interactively complete OOBE.
Alternatively, when /showoobe is set to None, OOBE is skipped and components are set to their default settings.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /showoobe full

Switch : /noreboot
Parameters : N /A

Action : Setup will not automatically reboot the PC when it completes down - level OS tasks.
The next time the PC is rebooted, setup will continue.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /noreboot

Switch : /DynamicUpdate
Parameters : Enable; Disable

Action : Specifies whether setup will perform Dynamic Update operations (search, download, and install updates).

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /DynamicUpdate disable

Switch : /Postoobe \setupcomplete.cmd
Parameters : Local file path or UNC network path to a file named setupcomplete.cmd

Action : Injects setupcomplete.cmd file from the specified location.
Setupcomplete.cmd is a customized script to perform tasks after the installation completes but before first user login.
It is run with System privileges.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /postoobe c:\script\setupcomplete.cmd

Switch : /Postrollback
Parameters : Local file path or UNC network path to a file named setuprollback.cmd

Action : Injects setuprollback.cmd file from the specified location.
Setuprolback.cmd is a customized script to perform tasks after the installation fails and the PC has rolled back to its previous OS.
It is run with the same privileges as the user or process that launched setup.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /postrollback \MyShare\script\setuprollback.cmd

Switch : /installfrom
Parameters : Local file path or network path to a specific.wim

Action : Specifies location for installation source media /files

Example : setup.exe /auto clean /installfrom d:\myWim\customwim.wim

Switch : /PBRUpdate
Parameters : Enable; Disable

Action : When /PBRUpdate is set to Enable, setup will update or create the PBR partition.
Conversely, when /PBRUpdate is set to Disable, setup will not update or create the PBR partition

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /PBRupdate disable

Switch : /migratealldrivers
Parameters : All; None

Action : When /migratealldrivers is set to All, setup will attempt to migrate all drivers as part of the installation.
In contrast, when /migratealldrivers is set to None, setup will not migrate anydrivers as part of the installation.
NOTE: this switch should only be used in testing and test envoriments. It should not be used in production.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /migratealldrivers none

Switch : /installdrivers
Parameters : Local file path or UNC network path to a folder that contains.inf files

Action : Setup will inject all driver.infs found in the specified location during the installation process.
Setup will recursively search through all the subfolders of the specified location.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /installdrivers c:\myUpgrade\drivers

Switch : /Telemetry
Parameters : Enable; Disable

Action : When /Telemetry is set to Enable, setup will collect and upload telemetry generated by the installation.
However, when /Telemetry is set to Disable, setup will not collect and upload installation - related telemetry.

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /Telemetry enable

Switch : /copylogs
Parameters : Local file paths and UNC network paths

Action : Upon failure, setup will copy or upload compressed logs to the specified location.
Please note that the PC and /or user must have permission and network access to the specified file path.
This command runs in the system context so may not have permissions to copy to locations that require user permissions

Example : setup.exe /auto upgrade /copylogs \MyShare\UpgradeLogs

Here are some usage examples.

An admin wants to upgrade the departments PCs from Windows 7 Enterprise overnight. He does not want the setup user interface to appear, but he does want the end users to manually go through the Out of box experience(known as OOBE) experience.
The following command line can be used to orchestrate the full upgrade to Windows vNext, requiring user input only once the machine reaches OOBE :

Setup.exe /auto upgrade /quiet /showoobe full
Alternatively, a deployment engineer may want to collect logs and other diagnostic information from test PCs in the event of a failure.
The following command line instructs setup invoke the setuprollback.cmd script after an installation failure :

Setup.exe /auto upgrade /installdrivers c:\myUpgrade\drivers /postrollback c:\setuprollback.cmd

Microsoft has released another Windows 10 build for the Windows Insider program and this release brings with it a plethora of new features including Cortana, Continuum and a bunch more.

To upgrade to the new build, follow the steps with your install of Windows 10 9879 or you can download the ISOs using the links at the bottom of this post.

  • Click on the start menu and in the search box type 'Windows Update'
  • Chose 'Windows Update Settings'
  • In the left panel click 'Preview Builds'
  • Click on the 'Check' now.
  • Download the new build
After you do this, if there are bits to download for your machine, the process will start and then the waiting game begins.

windows_10_problems.jpg

Yesterday, Microsoft took a lot of people by surprise by releasing Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926 rather earlier than expected. Here at BetaNews we've installed the latest build on various machines -- virtual and real -- having battled with downloads, and now it's time for testing.

We'll be taking a look at this latest build in more depth in future articles, but before we do, it is probably worth pointing out some of the known problems. From playing with build 9926 just briefly it's easy to see that it's a marked improvement on previous releases, but Microsoft has helpfully forewarned users of issues they might encounter.

Of course, we must remember that this is only a preview; problems are very much to be expected and they'll almost certainly be ironed out in the final release. That said, things get off to something of an irritating start for some people who will find that rather than booting straight in to Windows 10, they are instead present with a boot screen. Microsoft explains that this is because of a "bug where a second boot option is persisted to uninstall the Windows 10 Technical Preview and roll back to the previous OS installed". It's just a matter of manually selecting the correct boot option each time, or waiting for 30 seconds for the default option to be selected.

The revamped Start menu has a few potential issues. You may find that the menu fails to launch from time to time, and icon labels can be truncated. One of the most eagerly anticipated features, Cortana, has quite a few problems at the moment. Microsoft points out that complex reminders may not be correctly created, and it is not currently possible to edit reminders. It's worth creating a test reminder as there's a possibility that the first one you create won't be displayed, and completed reminders do not currently move to the History section.

Gamers may experience problems with Xbox Live-enabled games, but Microsoft promises that a fix is in the pipeline. Other issues include the appearance of a batter icon on the lock screen of devices that do not have batteries, pixilation in Remote Desktop sessions, a disappearing Music app, and shorter-than-normal battery life on devices with Connected Standby.

As this is prelease software, there will undoubtedly be more problems than this, but it's good to know what you're dealing with right from the start. We're still testing out this Build 9926, and you can expect more coverage as we try it out. In the meantime, have you noticed a marked improvement from previous builds?

As I tested the technical preview before (attempting to download the latest one), applications are fully working in Technical Preview perhaps an automatic compatibility is set.

I've installed CCleaner and Adobe Dreamweaver CC without any problems. ;)

@jeevan_500 : Since I didn't yet test the latest build where many changes and improvements implemented; then base on my experience, the OS is fine at its performance; none I can see anything wrong which conducted in Virtual Machine.

Applications are working on majority so it should not be the problem.

Installed 9926 in VB.Had to do some updates before installation.Download and installation went fine via Windows Update.
The OS looks good. Security suites(have tested a few) and programs I have installed work fine without bugs or conflict.
Taskbar has big search bar which I dont care for however it is integrated with Cortana.
Start menu has changed also. Not sure if I care for this change.
However I installed 9926 late last night and havent really had a chance to really dig into it
