Eset is a well-known Slovakian antivirus, highly appreciated for its lightness on the system.
Formerly called Eset-Nod32, the publisher has modified its entire range in this 2024 edition, calling them Home, Premium and Ultimate (which includes a VPN thanks to a partnership with Windscribe).

In this version, Eset keeps the same recipe as the previous version, while strengthening its anti-malware engine.
Let's take a look at all this together.

User interface :
The Eset interface has not changed at all.
It remains sober and elegant.
It features numerous settings for geeks, but is also accessible to novices, as Eset offers numerous explanations of its modules.

The software is very light.

Web protection: 12/12
Eset blocked all malicious links.
Only 1 URL did not work.

Fake crack : 1/1
Eset LiveGuard attempts to analyze the file.
It declares the file to be safe, as the SFX is password-protected.
During the launch, Eset will block the 3 malicious installations.

Malware Pack : Remaining 9 files out of 270.
Eset has an excellent anti-malware engine, sweeping out virtually the entire pack!
At launch, before, Eset blocks 2 more in Suspicious, dropping the score from 11 to 9 .
Other samples fail to launch, corrupted. Could Eset have disinfected them?

Final scan :
Eset : 0
NPE : 0
Malwarebytes : 0

Final opinion:

Eset offers comprehensive, high-performance protection.
Its proven anti-malware engine delivers excellent performance.
Its Web filtering is also very good!
Eset is highly recommendable.

fwiw I think ESET Nod32 is still available. I am running Nod32 on win10_VM. Must be correct as ESET sends me email to "upgrade" to Home.... Nod32 also appears to provide some internet protection, but I would like to understand better what web protection services Nod32 is providing. fwiw2 about 13 months ago I downgraded from ESET Premium with LiveGuard because of firewall issues, and their support offered conflicting information multiple times. This firewall issue was exasperated due to support appearing misinformed or uneducated about their own software. Finally I had to reinstall win10 (and switched to another AV on that computer). ESET may have fixed its Premium firewall issue since then? I'm long time user of ESET, and my current Nod32 has been working fine.

I decided to go with Nod32 also since I don't need other extra protection layers that are offered with higher protection plans.
ATM they don't offer Nod32 on their main page so user has to look for it. I just hope that they don't decide to discontinue it in future.

Nice to see ESET performed very well, ESET has always been one of my favourites due to its lightness and low false positives.

For anyone interesting in using ESET, I would strongly recommend choosing one of the versions that include the LiveGuard feature because it helps out with zero-day malware a lot. Otherwise, ESET mainly relies on signatures which can fail against zero-day malware.

All of my ESET premium accounts got a free Ultimate upgrade until the end of my current contract which is 3 more years. Very very nice!!!

I got an email about it just to click and do a free upgrade. So y'all check your mail.

Yeah I honestly yet to see liveguard react to anything that's confirmed and those that are malware liveguard stays quiet. So I question it's capability but something is better than nothing.

I saw that you didn't max out it's heuristics via the sensitivity options. They all look default. Which is ok and it seems not to hurt it but still I am wondering how it would work with everything maxed.

That's a steep price increase for a feature that's often shown to not really work. I don't believe it's worth it unless it goes for the same price of EIS, and even then you can get cheaper deals on something like Kaspersky or Bitdefender that offer stronger security.

hmmm I thought the same thing re Premium & LiveGuard until it broke the firewall and ESET support was clueless about a fix. That was 13 months ago, maybe they fixed it, I hope so.

well before ESET Premium borked my firewall, off the top of my head I recall LiveGuard reacting several times. ESET put the activity on-hold until it reached a decision, which usually took 3 to 5 minutes. I liked it until the firewall crash, then discovered CheckPoint Harmony does its cloud threat emulation much faster.

ESET has extremely powerful signatures but unless you take your time to learn and program some HIPS rules, it will not be that responsive for anything it does not identify. Unless you're being targeted it's unlikely you'll find something not already in its signatures.
