ESET has extremely powerful signatures but unless you take your time to learn and program some HIPS rules, it will not be that responsive for anything it does not identify. Unless you're being targeted it's unlikely you'll find something not already in its signatures.
Can't see many users these days bothering with that now, we are living in a works out of the box system.

For working out of the box I'd recommend Bitdefender or McAfee. Both require nearly 0 configuration.

I still feel strange actually recommending McAfee but their new cloud engine is actually good.

McAfee, maybe up to a point? But I get what you're saying, as far as out of the box. Bitdefender, absolutely.
Final opinion:

McAfee is an antivirus that has evolved with the times.
It finally protects users correctly, although improvements must continue, especially with regard to unknown malware, which it unfortunately lags behind in terms of protection...
I really appreciated its lightness in memory, and above all the fact that the publisher finally seems to understand that McAfee has been sinking for several years...

It's recommended if you're a cautious surfer.
If you're a high-risk user, I wouldn't recommend it, as it will have trouble protecting you against unknown malware.

but I would like to understand better what web protection services Nod32 is providing
ESET uses Zvelo technology. If you set parental control to block all unknown websites, its web protection is really robust. It filters any address that is unknown to the Zvelo database. This protection works not only in browsers but also at the network level, filtering any IP that is unknown to the Zvelo database.nod32 AV is limited but internet security version is good.

probably a terminology miscommunication: for me Nod32 is the antivirus, EIS= internet security, Premium= adds to IS. And perhaps in some marketing ploy (?) now there's HOME with some new naming under HOME -- I thought I saw "ultimate." Nod32 seems to assert some internet protection, which is under Parental control, not my immediate focus now a days so never looked there. thanks!

exactly. even you can be a happy clicker and it still defends the system. For 99 percent of people, its default protection is enough and light. As one of our good members said eset signature detection and machine-generated signatures are working and will work for the foreseeable future. I hope they add more light protection mechanisms in version 18, which will not make the program heavy.
in recent tests, it's clear that they upped their game and now they detect malware even better. I think this happened when they released version 17.1
