Hot Take Hasleo Backup Suite has gone Paid

I appreciate Hasleo's free version features, especially the notable "Delta" restore. The cost is also attractive, especially since they offer a single plan with "free upgrades." I think the license is system-locked and not transferable, though they might reset it for specific hardware changes.

But there is a difference between $50 per year that Macrium charges for version 10 and $56-ish for HBS for a lifetime perpetual license with upgrades. Macrium's policy is greedy, whereas Hasleo's seems very reasonable.
Macrium is based in the UK with UK-based developers and is paying UK wages and benefits.

Hasleo is based in Communist China paying nothing near UK wages and benefits.

Huge expense difference between China and the UK, but if one looks at the gross margins - Communist Chinese companies routinely have higher gross profits than European or other western ones. And in many cases, higher net profits.

So who is more greedy?

The Hasleo "perpetual" updates include all future versions updates or just the major version updates?
The way I see it:
Past - Always Free
Present - Always "Free", as long as you pay one time fee
Future - Always "Free", as long as you pay the yearly fee

The Hasleo "perpetual" updates include all future versions updates or just the major version updates?

AOMEI, for example, offers a lifetime update scheme that includes all future versions.
All future versions as well.

Also the free tier does everything I need. People are acting surprised when tehy have been saying for months a paid version would occaasionaly be released.

I wonder why they never thought of that in the beginning???

They had another intention with the price setup, according to this mail:

Dear xxx,

Thank you for your advice. In fact, our main goal is to charge commercial users, and we don't want to impose too many restrictions on individual users. Perhaps our approach is mistaken.

Best regards,

Hasleo Software

Since the free version contains mostly everything any home user needs, they obviously had ruled that out. The free version has an abundance of features compared to competitors.

I don't mind & never have had issues with paying for good software, maybe the initial OP post was a little OTT, but it is expensive for a single user license, & the need to clone etc is something I will always need & as I'm in my late 60s a 'lifetime' license frankly is not as attractive as it one was.

As you said 'After a longer communication with Hasleo, it ended up in this statement from them:'

IMO there intention was somewhat mistaken, & less than transparent that if a user was downloading a new version things would change, a warning really should have been given? - Never a good idea I feel - Whether future restrictions will be imposed on the free version is still unknown but after decades of using software I for one will be surprised if it isn't - No such thing as a free lunch continues to be true.

Give Hasleo some more time, they will come around, people were claiming they would always be free, that has changed, when reality sinks in, this will change again, just like Macrium had to change to avoid going out of business.

No one exists on the life time license format, at least not vendors with one item, for people who would be considered geeks. People here at MWT backup, most people do not, thus the market size for macrium and hasleo is much smaller that for norton or avast. I'm sure you see my point.

Strange, i updated the free hasleo version yesterday . . . will it continue to work or should i use another free like aomei backupper

There is still a free version. It's just that now there's a Pro version with more features. Think of Macrium Reflect version 8.

@annaegorov, read this, as it applies to you too. If you're having trouble with reading comprehension, may I suggest reading rainbow hosted by LaForge?

I do. But my point, unlike me (crippled joke), still stands. I'm sure Macrium needed money. Everyone does. But they've lost more money when they introduced their subscription model then they would have without it. Hasleo say this and met that need, and did not repeat the subscription mistake.

The family edition, which supports up to 5 PCs, is now available and priced at approximately $89.95.

The response from the Hasleo Forum admin addresses the topic of free lifetime upgrades.

I get the attraction guys, I really do. But to make and improve a good product requires a financial surplus, this ONLY comes thru a consistent money flow.

Imagine I say the following to you, as my employee: "We will probably make enough money, to pay you at least 10 out of 12 times this year, that is our hope, or I will reduce the staff to a 3 man team".

The subscription model allows me to say to you: "We are doing great, we have a strong subscription base, that allows us to forecast, a consistent flow of capital, and even enough to greatly improve the product, which will allow us the opportunity to hire additional help, and commit to overtime pay also"

Incorrect. Again. Macrium overplayed their hand, and now they're feeling the pinch. $50 is way too much to charge when the pool of potential users is so small, especially given that those same users know the competition. Yes Macium needs money. Everyone does. But that does not given them the right to fleece users. Macrium Reflect X offers nothing that HBS and IDW do not, that latter two of which don't view their client base as piggy banks, Macrium forgot they are not the only game in town, and, at least judging by their ever-shrinking user-base, it came right back around to bite them in the ass.

The introduction of the subscription model for Macrium Reflect has not led to the poor earnings situation. A significant loss was already incurred in 2022. ChatGPT has calculated the following earnings:
Result — Calculated Annual Profits (2019–2023)

Fiscal Year Calculated Annual Profit (GBP)
2019 +125.495
2020 +254.959
2021 +900.428
2022 -488.964 (Loss)
2023 -1,129.293 (Significant Loss)

I therefore suspect that the introduction of the subscription model should be seen more as an attempt to generate ongoing revenue. Whether this attempt will succeed remains to be seen. I hope so for Macrium's sake.
