I can make the fun feature SHOW MATRIX interactive again (make it point and click). For performance reasons cookies would be dropped (most browser block 3p cookies anyway). Question is: uMatrix has been iced for so long, do people really want to get it back?

Yes, there is likely still interest—but mainly among advanced users.

uMatrix’s point-and-click matrix was useful because it made the page’s requests visible and allowed precise, per-site/per-type decisions. Many users preferred that level of control over a simpler allow/block interface.

However, reviving only the interactive matrix would not automatically restore the full uMatrix experience:

• Users may expect the old rule model, scope handling, import/export behavior, and logging workflow.
• Without cookies or another persistence mechanism, preferences could be lost between sessions or browsers.
• Dropping third-party cookies is generally privacy-friendly, but it should be clearly documented because some sites still depend on them for login, embedded services, or preferences.
• A maintained project needs ongoing compatibility and security review; the original uMatrix has been inactive for a long time.
• Some users may prefer uBlock Origin’s current interface and dynamic filtering rather than maintaining a separate extension.

A sensible implementation would be to make the matrix an optional advanced interface, keep the default experience simple, and provide explicit import/export for rules. It would also help to state clearly which parts are being revived and which legacy features are intentionally absent.

So, yes: the feature is probably worth bringing back if it is maintained properly and aimed at users who want granular control. The strongest value is not merely nostalgia, but the matrix’s ability to show and control the page’s request relationships at a glance.

   It already has logging (to create allow rrules) = SHOW BLOCKS (shows what is blocked) and the new SHOW MATRIX (shows what is allowed)

   a) My remark about cookies is because cookies are not a standard DNR resource type
   b) A privacy friendly extension woud never use cookies for storage itself
   c) User settings are stored and survive browser sessions and extension updates

   Yes that is the whole point I made 3P-Matrix-lite, it is manifest 3 compatible and uses only DNR rules, have you seen how tiny the program is (< 100 KB)

   I have a better solution for uBO-users living in 5Eyes countries or extended EU-zone, have a look at uBol-stripped on top of that with Mv3 limitations and enhanced containment between extensions, it is better to have 2 separate extensions for a functional (a) and a technical (b) reason:
   a) using 2 extensions gives you a clear signal (two different counters, when 3P shows blocks you know they are from the old uBO dynamic filtering)
   b) 3P-Matrix-lite is tiny (less than 100 KB, while uBO-lite is nearly 10MB) and for applying structured programming (read this) separation is always better.

Could be useful on level 4 and 5, certainly not on lower levels. But I don't think I would often use it (perhaps sometimes to play with it).

It makes it simpler, no need for a seperate whitelist and it achieves same UX as original. Just point and click. Also it is on demand., so no worries about performance
