So halfway through 2024 and some of our favorite DNS providers have evolved and some didn't. Thus, based on your past/current experience which DNS Provider would you use if you wanted to maximize your security, malware protection and adblocking? (Including Privacy)

I'm not a huge fan of those DNS ad blockers. Sure, they block everything on network-level, before requests get to device, but this method is becoming less and less efficient every single day. If you look at the filters and whitelists of these ad blocking DNS servers, you'll see that whitelists constantly grow more and more. This is done because DNS doesn't really have any mechanism by which they could whitelist just specific requests and instead they have to whitelist entire domain for all websites in case of any issues. This is especially visible on websites that serve ads from their own domain, so basically, they only have two choices; either block entire website or whitelist entire website. There were also a lot of cases of website breakage which take time to get fixed as entire process of filter updating is manual.

This is why I only recommend using DNS ad blockers on devices which either have ad blocking app or extension in the browser. If website isn't working because it's blocked by DNS ad blocker, app and/or browser extension will fix the website for you using cosmetic filtering. DNS ad blockers should be used complementary with other more efficient ad blocking solution and then you'll get total protection. This is how I use AdGuard DNS, along with uBlock Origin in Brave and on Android, with their own app. Never had any issues or ads left on the websites.

NextDNS and AdGuardDNS will get the most votes because they offer a free plan with an account, adblocking, and more. Some DNS options are public, while others require a paid subscription.

I presume they tested free DNS only and NextDNS requires an account, just like Adguard.
Then again NextDNS has so many customizations that any comparison would be subjective.
UltraDNS used to be good, but now it is a joke, Comodo always was, still DNS without DoH today?!
I wonder if results would be different if they were using DoH only, since Chromium browsers leak a lot.

ControlD all day, everyday.
They offer the best features and they are under active development.
I was using NextDNS for quite some time and even paid the subscription however it looks like an abandoned project atm with some of the features being in beta stage since forever.

Went from Adguard home > NextDNS > ControlD, loving the service so far.
Development is way faster than NextDNS also NextDNS refuses to implement lists like Hagezi TIF (anti malware lists) because they only allow their own security lists which is nonsense imo.
Also had some BGP issues a couple of months back with them and just got plain ignored (still no response).
Latency is fine with both: DNS Performance

Not so fast, I mentioned the light mode a year ago, dev said no, in comparison NextDNS app implemented it within a week. And I can not use ControlID, if I can not see anything. 🙃

They are developing the light mode atm (not going to use it), plus the fact that you can contact them with questions/issues, with NextDNS you just get a plain ignore for months.
