Apple has released today iOS 16, the big software update for iPhone users that has been available in beta since June. iOS 16 is available on the iPhone 8 and newer, and the main new feature is a revamped lock screen.

Starting with iOS 16, iPhone users can customize their lock screen with widgets, Live Activities, a custom style for the time and date, and more. This redesigned lock screen will also have always-on capabilities on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

iOS 16 also brings updates to Apple’s various inbox apps including Messages, Maps, and Photos. The Messages app is getting an Undo Send feature, message editing support, as well as the ability to mark any conversation as unread. Apple Maps is getting support for Multi-stop routing, as well as improved maps in 11 new countries including France, Switzerland, and New Zealand.

Apple also introduced a new security feature in iOS 16 named Safety Check. It will allow users to immediately stop sharing their location, reset privacy permissions for all of their apps, and protect access to all messages on their devices.

Unfortunately, some of the new iOS 16 features Apple announced at its WWDC conference in June. That’s the case for the new iCloud Shared Photo Library, which will let family members contribute to a shared photo library that’s separate from their own photo collections in iCloud.

In addition to iOS 16, Apple has also released iOS 15.7 today. This is just a security update for iOS 15 with no new features that’s available on iPhone 6S or newer.
