AVG is average AV suitable for normal home users. i used it more then 1 & half year. The things i don't like that it's not so good at malware removal as i expected, false positive is a bit high on this AV plus it BB is not so strong, it's mostly depend on virus signatures. check AVG get owned by ransomware on this thread-

Yeah... The malware removal is a problem... It told my friend it was unable to remove a test virus :D (Not sure where he got it from but it was a virus like eicar designed to test AVs)...

AVG is a good product. I've only used the Free version, so cannot comment on their Internet Security edition. The ID Protection is their Behavioural component, which I tested a long time ago when it was a standalone product. I think I would probably like to test AVG Free again, in the coming weeks. I do miss their LinkScanner which was discontinued, and replaced with Secure Search (or something like that). There's a thread of that somewhere too.

As it's now mid-2014, I do think they need to re-fresh the GUI. Fingers-crossed for 2015. @starchild76

The short answer would be ... no. Great disappointment (for now). Almost any competition is better than it.

It's signature detection coverage is not as good as other great players like Avast, Avira, Kaspersky, Eset etc, and it's zero-day detection is bad either according to testing of mine and other members here.

Why People dislike AVG
  • People dislike it because they get infected when they use it, and then blame AVG for missing the thread. I really hate when people doing this as they was the one that clicked "download & accept" people need to learn how to control their clicks & stop blaming avg for poor detection when it is really the users fault.

System Performance
  • This may be the other reason why so many people hate AVG because they say it slows their system down, but I don't understand why they say that it may be their computer specs or something else. I have never experienced any slowdowns with Avg so I assume this *slowdown* is different for everyone that uses AVG.

The Truth
  • Avg is really good antivirus, but these mindless people ruin it because they have no idea what they are doing & say they got infected *nothing can detect everything 100%* people don't just can't really get that through their mind & even using the top rated antivirus you can still get infected.

How any Antivirus can be Good

  • Don't download from un-trusted sources
  • Don't click everything you see
  • Never click accept without knowing what it does
  • Learn how to stay safe
  • Don't accept anything anyone sends you (unless you know that file is safe) + Always upload that file to VirusTotal
  • Have a second opinion scanner (Hitman Pro, Malwarebytes)
  • Always search about what you download
  • Use ShadowDefender (If needed)
  • Get Adblock Plus
  • Use a Firewall
  • Learn how to use UAC
  • Don't download torrents
  • Never run Keygens as they spread malware pretty face.
  • Don't download anything
  • Think before you do something

Overall I think AVG is pretty good & it is just the poor users decisions that say its bad.

I agree with you @Fantasy , but some of these measures cannot be a standard for most everyday users. (ex shadow defender, visiting unknown sites)

They can use it if they aren't download anything, but these are the thing I've learned through out the years.

If they are doing any work like writing documents they can always write it & save the changes and upload it to online storage such as : MEGA, Dropbox, Google Drive.

As for visiting unknown sites you can always run the browser in sandboxed mode and have a look at the site.

That's great but if you can convince every average Joe to do these, he 'll simply say that he's bored to do it, it's complicated etc.
For me, an AV is considered good if it can protect the average Joe somewhat efficiently, whatever that means.
Anyway, it's nice to inform people about right steps towards security, as this is a main purpose of this awesome forum :)

95% of people under the roof of global network are laics at least when internet security is in question, unlike most of the members at this forum. So the advice's like 'don't download stuff from unknown sources and don't click here and there are not even considered'. Security Suite's are for these kind of users. For knowledgeable people IS software is almost obsolete.
As Nikos751 said this kind of programs are for average internet users and a good one is the one that protects them in their behavior, which AVG is failing to do on a regular basis.

I was a average user with no knowledge in computers once, but everytime I got infected I learned new things from that.

You've got to learn one way or the other.

You were a novice, but you were not the average ..Joe :p
If anyone dealt with such incidents like you and me in a degree, the average user would be knowledgable.
Other people learn things in other fields, others learn few things in their life ..generally.

Hahaha correct! but you are simply not an average Joe. The first steps with computer knowledge are always very small, so this situation cannot describe an average Joe.
Maybe I say it a bit strange as English is not my native language :p

People don't know how to test or review, Panda Cloud Free it is also "bad" but if you test it (for 3-4 days) with the PC online and try random samples, you will be amazed. With AVG it is the same, just because the "signatures" are not the best, AVG has ID Protect and that is very, very good. it will clean and protect you.

I will tell more in a future post about AV and detection.

I did test a lot of samples the last days on Panda cloud free, in both real system and Vm. One of them, after extracting some dozens of samples in a folder, I clicked to run samples and for a mysterious reason Panda did not react for all of them, as all the other times.
So, maybe you re right..
If this is not an example of what describes what you say, I would like to hear analytically what do you mean :)
