Hello there,

First things first: If Kaspersky works for you, then there's no need to change. We got a clear point here. Thing is i don't feel it's working the best for me. Recent issues i've not been liking about Kaspersky:

  • Application Control delaying software installation/removal
  • Lack of firewall notifications
  • Lack of notifications when software tries to create connections with a website/server (BitDefender does this)

I will still be using Kaspersky until my license is over, but i want to be informed for when the time arrives.

I've been having a look at BitDefender and i've been very pleased with the results i've seen. I'm wishing to hear your experiences with this product if they have been recent. Basically, what i need is it to be user-dependant, e.g notify me for everything and make me aware of everything that's happening on the background, a decent customizable firewall and great dynamic (on-execution) protection. I want it to be customizable and have great variety of options to play with and achieve maximum protection.

Thank you for reading.

I don't discount that possibility but, at the same time, I don't want to turn this into a discussion on global politics. :)

That's why I recommended a potential buyer keep this in mind. A majority of modern applications have some form of telemetry to their publishers but the difference here is the potential chance of a backdoor which is a different ballgame.

Would I renew my subscription? Nopes, at least until an independent security specialist reviews the code (keeping Kaspersky's IP confidential) and can assure customers there's no backdoor. Kaspersky should arrange for this in the interests of their customers & business.
Eugene has offered the source code be reviewed by analysts in the US to vindicate himself and his company!!What else can he do!!I would be more concerned about other vendors having backdoors to the NSA!;)

Which begs the question - why hasn't anybody taken him up on this offer? I'd love to use KIS again...heck I paid for a 3-year subscription! Now, if only an independent entity preferably from the EU/AU/JP or any 'neutral' country (obviously excluding the parties...err..countries in this slugfest) were to review the code and certify it as safe to use.

I decided to install Bitdefender to test it in one of my machines doing it as a complete newbie would do, i.e., I didn't uninstall Kaspersky first... to my surprise it did not uninstall Kaspersky on its own and right now I'm running both... surprisingly the system is still light :)

Get yourself a trial version of KIS 2018 and see for yourself if the speed has improved with Application Control. That was one of your issues, right?
I find that the functioning has greatly improved, as long as you don't try to tweak it out beyond the purposes for which it was designed. (In other words, don't try to use it like Comodo Firewall in paranoid mode.)

About firewall: keep in mind that virtually every software nowadays will connect to the internet, so those alerts are actually a bit redundant. If you run the software, you can assume it is connecting to the internet, unless you make a block rule for it.

For me that's the key phrase to this thread.
Since you need that i can tell you from my experience that you shouldn't use any of those two.
in my opinion you have two options, Eset and Comodo.
These 2 products are for me the king's of tweaking:).
Both of them have so many settings that you will be more than satisfied and i am pretty sure that you will find what you are looking for.
You can set both products to be as user depended as you want;)

Kaspersky seems to be, overall, the stronger suite and the less buggy software. Bitdefender used to be something of a joke in terms of bugs and incompatibilities, although their latest edition (2018) seems to work rather well. I am currently using Bitdefender TS 2018 and I find it reasonably close to the optimization/security extras, etc. that Kaspersky provides. I used KIS for 4-5 years until recently and decided to switch to Bitdefender for a change. So far, so good - Bitdefender updates well, does not slow boot time and does not slow web browsing. Those were always messy for me in the past whenever I tested Bitdefender and I had given up on this software, but the company seems to have upped their product. What is more, it is working fine alongside Malwarebytes 3.2 and Adguard 6.1, so I am willing to give it a try for a longer stint.
