Question Looking for modern (runs on win 11) ShadowDefender like utility?

Shadow Defender had the nice capability of restoring the system back to normal upon reboot. Shadow Defender was nice but it is now an abandonware and the current version BSOD WIN11 when core isolation is turned on.

Is there any other solution that's consumer facing and affordable?

Do any of them survive a reboot?

So basically I am looking for a daily restore function without the time it takes to daily restore a system via regular backup means (Macrium Restore)

You might want to check out Toolwiz Time Freeze or Deep Freeze by Faronics. Both are similar to Shadow Defender, allowing you to restore your system to a previous state upon reboot. They are compatible with Windows 11 and are consumer-friendly. However, please ensure to test them in a controlled environment before deploying them fully.

Deep Freeze, Reboot Restore and RollbackRx, and the outsider Try & Decide which is a tool within Acronis True Image. The backup program. I have the best experience with T & D and the worst with RBRx.

Qubes is a Hypervisor based virtualization platform that can run Debian, Fedora or Whonix flavor Linux systems in virtual machine windows.

And it can also create Disposable vm's, based off any of the 3 above. A disposable vm runs like regular machine, but once you shut it down, it will re-start brand new.

Where Windows' security boundary is the account, In Qubes the security boundary is the vm. And you can use as many vm windows simultaneously as your memory allow. So you can surf with your casual vm and work on your business vm separately at the same time. Whereas with Windows, you would need to signout and signin to another account.

As malware testers will tell you, virtual machines are protected from one another. So an infection in the casual surfing vm will not affect your business vm. So your business plans and accounting will be safe.

You can also create vm's without any network connections, almost guaranteeing that it will stay unhacked.

Darn I can't run it in VMware or at least it's not recommended and it's WIndows Support is minimal; it tends to be geared towards NIX which is fine and I will check it out. I've was looking for solution when my nephews visit.

Deep Freeze is the most active at the moment, the developers at faronics are always updating it, it's the one I recommend at the moment, it seems to me that SD has been a bit forgotten. It works on Windows 11, but it's not compatible with it.

Darn I can't run it in VMware

Qubes need hardware to run. It doesnt work in VMWare or VirtualBox. You are making 2 layers of virtualization. Qubes is a hardware based hypervisor. Try it on an older box, most people have one. 8Gb of ram will be fine. SSD recommended.

However you should be able to run Windows within it. At least they make a virtualization toolkit so that it interacts with the rest of the qubes.

It's quite a heavy system, requiring dedicated hardware.

Besides Deep Freeze there are no alternatives for Windows 11. It's such a niche technology that never really took off besides a few people.

Also I'm not sure you can run Windows smoothly inside Qubes (never tried though). Qubes works with Linux VM's though but if you need Windows then.....

Never found a program to replace shadow though tried most - As full image of C:\ only takes about 15 seconds & as I have lots of room II now do that mostly every couple of days (always when my PC using grandchildren arrive) & can quickly restore should the need arise.
