Macrium Reflect Home v8.1.8110

Bug fixes and Improvements v8.1.8110 - 10th July 2024
  • Imaging
    • We've resolved a rare problem that could cause an application error when building a full index from one or more delta indexes.
  • General
    • When doing an offline activation of a Reflect subscription, Reflect would incorrectly think that the Offline activation code was invalid if the subscription expiry date was more than 2.5 years in the future. This has now been resolved.

The Macrium Reflect X backend has been comprehensively overhauled, and we've added some great new functionality as well...

Our File Format is Now Open Source!

We've now opened up our .mrimg & .mrbak file format on GitHub, and provided the full source code for restoring all data
We enable our customers to access their data freely, eliminating the need for proprietary software and ensuring complete data independence. It's your data and you own it!

New UI Design

We've updated the Reflect user interface to follow a newer Sidebar Navigation design pattern. This makes it easier to navigate the full functionality of Macrium Reflect for both new and existing users.

FYI, for all Macrium users, the new Reflect X is now only subscription based. There will no longer be one-time licenses .

Macrium backup software will be subscription only. Their new X version will launch on 8. October ad they canceled their one-time license option

Does anyone have a recommendation of a comparable effective/reliable backup software similar to Macrium as I don't plan on supporting the subscription-based model.

Thanks in advance

I switched to Hasleo Backup a few weeks ago. So far it seems fast and reliable.

I understand people don't like the subscription model.

BUT we live in perilous times financially, especially for business owners, which means; competition is fierce, enforced price controls take over, sales may go down, bidding wars occur, suppliers, and their price controls, customer demands , staffing ETC.

So anyone who offers a lifetime license is taking a huge risk (IMHO). They are great for the consumer though.

So what is a business to do, one who wants to keep advancing their product, desiring to keep up, or stay on the cutting edge, providing new app features for the consumers?

The subscription model provides a money flow to continue forward, to avoid closing the doors. Money does make the world go around.

I use CloneZilla which is free. It is not a Windows app. You boot it from a usb stick. It recognizes many file systems, including Windows , Mac and Linux. You use the same usb stick to create and restore images. Then I plug in my portable USB drive and save the images there. It can also work with SMB shares so you can save images to a NAS. Sure it is a little inconvenient to boot up a usb stick, but how many times do you do image backups, once a week, once a month?

That's all true. But money's tight for consumers too. Why would anyone pay for a subscription-modeled Macrium Reflect X. There are alternatives, such as Hasleo or Terabyte's IFW, that are not subscription-based. It's not as though imaging applications need constant updates and refinements, unless they are purposefully releasing something they know is not solid.

I won't be using Reflect ever again. This new model just shows how little they valuable the people that buy their products, and how they only see them as money machines.

I bought version 8 but I didn't see anything that would satisfy me, I asked for a refund and they refunded my money but I don't even think about it anymore. There are also good programs to choose from when I need them.

I think the Windows world still haven't come to terms with the onset of open source. It has been how many years now since open source biz model appeared ? And still they don't innovate and want to milk consumers of their money. You innovate and create new products and come up with enterprise products that you can charge money for. And then you release a free version for cosumers and enterprise customers to try. Can't help people without brains, People will move to a free version where there is one available.

Consumers will try the free version and buy it for their workplace. IBM and other mainframe companies have done that to universities and colleges for many many years. They were giving away not just software but hardware !

And enterprise versions are not that difficult to come up with; just add a central console and the ability to manage multiple copies of your software remotely. Just look at the many endpoint versions of AV for examples.

Not lifetime, but for the specific version of course. I echo what @n8chavez said as well - I mean I am just talking here as i do not know macrium's financial status/records, but they do have a dedicated customer base. Plus, maybe they can leave the sub model for the bigger companies or businesses than us consumers. There are things I have to pay for already such as VPN, etc, that run on an infrastructure too. At this point I will look elsewhere than Macrium. The worst case scenario is being forced to 'pirate' macrium reflect x, like I do for adobe acrobat. Mind u I don't make enough money to afford these nor do I make any profits from using these programs directly - i am sill willing to pay, but not for a subscription.

I just did some research on Hasleo - it has been tested more extensively by cereberus as i read on win10/11 forums. I won't post links here, but he has done some extensive testing, and he has found hasleo much more reliable than other backup apps (excluding macrium of course). in fact i think he is moving to hasleo precisely because of the sub model. only bring it up as he has done tests on his reliability alongside other apps.

It is very good. However, I'm not sure it'll stay free. I don't see how they can afford that. Terabyte's IFW is also very, very, good and comparatively cheap.
