Asked co-pilot about the pop ups

McAfee Total Protection often displays upselling popups for several reasons, primarily tied to its business model and user engagement strategies. Here's a breakdown of why you're seeing these popups:

1. Marketing and Upselling

McAfee uses popups to promote additional products or services, such as:

  • VPN subscriptions
  • Premium features
  • Extended protection plansThese are part of their strategy to encourage users to upgrade or purchase add-ons. Even if you've already paid for a subscription, McAfee may still promote other services.[1]

2. Informational Alerts

Some popups are meant to inform you about:

  • Completed scans
  • System health status
  • Subscription renewal reminders[1]

3. Pre-installed Software

McAfee often comes pre-installed on new PCs (especially Windows machines), sometimes as part of OEM agreements. If you're using a trial version or haven't fully activated your subscription, you're more likely to see frequent promotional popups.[1]

4. Outdated Software

Running an outdated version of McAfee can lead to more frequent notifications. Updating to the latest version may reduce the number of popups.[2]

How to Reduce or Disable McAfee Popups

If the popups are bothering you, here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Disable Notifications in Windows:
    • Go to Settings > System > Notifications
    • Find McAfee in the list and toggle it off
  2. Adjust McAfee Settings:
    • Open McAfee
    • Navigate to Settings or My Preferences
    • Look for Notifications or Alerts
    • Disable promotional or non-critical alerts[3]
  3. Uninstall McAfee (if not needed):
    • If you're using another antivirus or prefer Windows Defender, you can uninstall McAfee to stop all popups entirely.[4]

I've had pop-ups with McAfee in the past. I declined the services offered, and that was that. No further annoyances.
Which is something I hadn't considered. I haven't been hit with pop-up and offers like I had until using McAfee. With Kaspersky, Eset and F-Secure I never had a pop-up or up sell, so it was annoying in what I was getting. I don't mind trying it again if going through the initial pop-ups and upsells settle down once they "realized" I've seen and acknowledged them.

The MCPR.exe uninstaller (after using the Windows/App uninstall) seems to have done a nice job, and uninstalling DefenderUI with its minimal installer footprint would be pretty easy in giving McAfee another chance, and maybe to not have been so impulsive to have uninstalled it in the first place and see if it would have settled down.

And so it begins ;) :) This morning when I did a manual update, it did open the app with a notification to run a "smart scan" which it showed all the dire issues that could be resolved if I upgraded. Even when going through the prompts just to get through the prompts, the home page says, Your protection looks good, there will still be the information icon in the system tray in which you need to open the app, go into scans and click Got it, to confirm you're aware of the results (in this case for the smart scan, I didn't see the Got it after the scan, but maybe the system tray area pop up would have brought me there, 3rd image below). It would be nice if the app on the UI also had a display for the module it has the "i" for.

Fortunately, I bought the license at a very cheap price, auto renewal being disabled, so if I decide to move on, it won't be a big loss.

Edit: and now I just got this pop up. Sorry McAfee, you're gone 😢

I had those pop ups too and some more, it is really annoying and the sad part is that I really like how light and efficient the new McAfee is, but those nasty ads? Makes me want to nuke it.

Which is what I did, nuke it, but I'm willing to give it another try, just in case Oldie1950 post of acknowledging them helps to stop any future ones. I did like how light and efficient it is, too. But if I get any more follow-up pop-ups/solicitations, I'll uninstall it again ;) :)

How concerned should I be with McAfee's VPN showing the below DNS response fails from the dnscheck.tools website? Proton and Mullvad pass these tests. Even F-Secure VPN passes though it takes it longer to go through the DNS security test.

Also, I've never been able to load the dnsleaktest.com website with McAfee VPN enabled. All the other ones I've used have never had that problem?
