The preview builds of Windows 10 Redstone 5 update included ‘Sets’ feature that allowed users to add tabs to almost every window. Microsoft said Sets will add browser-like tabs to almost every app’s window and it was supposed to support traditional desktop apps too, which means Sets would add tabs to File Explorer as well.

Windows 10 Sets was shortly removed from the preview builds and Microsoft confirmed that Sets feature likely won’t return any time soon. As we reported recently, references to Sets showed up in SDK build 19577, suggesting that Microsoft could bring back Sets in a future Windows 10 update.

In addition to Sets, Microsoft also experimented with a new Alt+Tab experience where users can switch between the tabs within Sets inside the Alt-Tab switcher.

If a new report is believed to be true, Microsoft may bring back the experimental Alt-Tab experience and Chromium Edge could be the first app to support it.

This is likely to be part of restoring Sets experience on Windows 10 as Sets changes how Alt+Tab works by allowing tabs of an app to appear in the Alt+Tab switcher. In near future, up to five recent tabs of Microsoft Edge will show up in Windows 10’s app switcher, which can be accessed with Alt+Tab keyboard combination.

Currently, when you press Alt+Tab, Microsoft shows windows of open apps. In a future update, Microsoft will show multiple tabs of Microsoft Edge in Alt+Tab app switcher. For example, if you have three open tabs in Microsoft Edge, you’ll see three different thumbnails in the Alt+Tab view instead of one.

Dev channel update to 83.0.461.1 is live

Hello insiders, today we’re releasing build 83.0.461.1 to the Dev channel. As you can see, this is the first update from major version 83. This is a slight deviation from our normal schedule due to current events. Also, if you missed it last week, we announced here that we’re temporarily pausing any major updates to Stable in light of current global circumstances and to be consistent with the Chromium project: Update on Stable channel releases for Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Edge Blog.

As for all that’s new and noteworthy:

Added features:

• Added the ability to sync Extensions.
• Added a page to Settings to manage Family Safety settings.
• Added the ability to add all tabs to a Collection.

• Added support for adverb highlighting in Immersive Reader.

Top Feedback Summary for March 27

Hello, Insiders! We’re back with another update for you. This week, we have a new item being added specifically for new users to our Stable build.

We have had some business users explain to us that their favorites are not importing into new Edge, so we’ve added the new Feedback item Some users lose their favorites on update to Microsoft Edge. After conversations with these users, we found that the favorites they were looking for are favorites from IE11 being synced with OneDrive. We are investigating other complaints about losing favorites when updating to the new Microsoft Edge, but we have some mitigating steps for business users.

If your business configured a group policy for IE11 to redirect favorites to OneDrive, it’s possible that you are running into this situation. OneDrive favorites can be saved on the cloud to “Free up space” on the computer, and we found users running into this situation have this feature turned on and syncing turned off. In order for favorites to sync with the computer so that new Edge can see them, you will need to resume syncing. To do so, click on the OneDrive icon in the task bar (the blue cloud next to the hidden icons option), and you should see an option at the top to resume syncing in a yellow bar. If you do not see that, click on the More … menu option and select Resume syncing.

Once everything has been synced, you will want to import your favorites from IE in new Edge. Click the … menu icon in the top right, click Settings, and then click on Import browser data. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer as your target from the drop down (if it’s not already selected), select which items to import, and then click Import. Your favorites should now show up in new Edge from IE11. If you continue to see issues with your favorites after these steps, and you’re a business user under a group policy, please let us know!

Microsoft Edge Chromium offers an option in its Settings to clear browsing data when you close it, you can choose what to delete from Browsing history, Download history, Cookies, and other site data, Autofill form data, etc. If you’ve configured Edge to auto-remove cookies when you exit the browser (which signs you out from most of the sites), in each session, you need to input login credentials every time for the websites you regularly visit, to avoid this, latest Edge Canary 83 provides a new option under Cookies and site data in the edge://settings/clearBrowsingDataOnClose page to keep specific cookies.

For our other channels, we’ve posted an update to our blog post here: Update on Stable channel releases for Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Edge Blog. It outlines our plans for Beta, which will skip version 82 and then see and update straight to version 83 later, as well as Stable, which will soon be updated to version 81 in order to align with Chromium’s release schedule. Additionally, we announced an update to our TLS 1.0/1.1 deprecation plans for Edge Legacy and IE here: Plan for change: TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 soon to be disabled by default - Microsoft Edge Blog.

Good day, Insiders! It’s the end of March and we have some things we’re marking Addressed today. Additionally, we provided an update this morning on our release schedule so be sure to check out the blog here for those details.

We are really excited to announce that the new tab page items we started rolling out earlier this month are now available to all in our Dev and Canary channels. This means we are marking these all as Addressed today:

• Add an option to hide the Bing search bar on the new tab page
• Allow the search bar in the new tab page to be configured with other search providers
• Provide an option to set a custom URL for a new tab instead of showing the new tab page

If you have specific feedback around these items, please head over to the forum thread with the update from the team and give us your thoughts!

While we do still have the cookies and custom background photos feedback items listed as Planned for March, the team has been actively communicating the status of this. These are currently available for users in Canary which meets our definition of Planned for… . We will provide updates for these two once we have more information.

Microsoft Edge is becoming the browser you didn’t know you needed:

Collections, vertical tabs, and immersive reader are particularly compelling.

It's no secret that we've been enthusiastic about Microsoft's new, Chromium-based Edge browser for a while now. But that enthusiasm has mostly been limited to "a default Windows browser that doesn't suck," rather than being for any particularly compelling set of features the new Edge brings to the browser ecosystem.

In a folksy announcement this week, Microsoft politely declared its determination to step up our expectations from "doesn't suck" to somewhere on the level of "oh, wow." Microsoft Corporate VP Liat Ben-Zur spent plenty of time enthusing about the way the new features are, apparently, already changing her life.

Unfortunately, despite her use of the present tense, most of them aren't yet available—even on the Canary build on the Edge Insider channel.

Greetings, Insiders! Welcome to the first full week of April! We’re excited to close out a couple more items, as well as bring a few new ones to this list.

First up, the newly Addressed! Option to set a custom photo as the New Tab Page background photo is now in our Dev channel. Here’s how you can try it out:

• On the new tab page, click the settings icon (gear) on the top right
• Select Custom
• Select Your own image
• Click the upload icon next to Remove
• Note: You can only upload a .jpeg, .jpg, or .png file as your image.

Let us know what you think! We know this has been something the community has asked us to implement for a while now and we’re really excited to be bringing this to you all.

Our other Addressed item this week, Provide option to keep specific cookies when choosing to clear browsing data on close, is also something we know the community has wanted. Starting today in Dev, when you navigate to edge://settings/privacy and click on Choose what to clear every time you close the browser, you will see several options you can toggle now.

When you click on the option for Cookies and other site data you can add in specific sites to not clear on exit. This will help you keep the cookies you want while ensuring the ones you don’t want are removed on exit of the browser. Think we’re missing something in this list? Let us know via the feedback tool! As you are aware, the team is always reviewing that feedback to help refine decisions we’ve made.

Now for the new items! There are a couple of issues we’ve seen reports of that we are now adding to this list to keep track of. MSA profile picture is not updating is being added under Planned. Mouse cursor sometimes disappears is an item we now have listed In Discussion. The team is currently investigating reports for both of these. If you happen to notice your cursor disappearing while using a touch pad or see a generic profile picture when you have a profile picture set, please submit feedback through the browser including full diagnostics. This will massively help the team out with their investigations. We’ll provide updates on both of these as we get them.

Lastly, a popular item requested has been Add ability to close tabs via double-click and we’re adding it to Under Review. As with the other items, we’ll provide updates for this as the team discusses and reviews.

If you made it this far, you’re probably wondering why we haven’t mentioned something about the new tab page items we marked as Addressed last week. We provided an update to that, and we’re still talking with the team to address the questions you’ve raised. Once that’s finalized, we will provide that information over in last week’s top feedback thread. We absolutely appreciate your patience around this.

Hello insiders, today we’re releasing build 83.0.478.5 to the Dev channel. This is our Beta release candidate for major version 83, and since it’s also not that much newer than last week’s Dev channel build, it’s a relatively light week this week in terms of changes. Regarding known issues, we’ve made some fixes for high, constant CPU use in random extensions or tabs, but since there could be many possible causes, we’re still very interested in knowing places where people are still seeing it, especially if it can be consistently reproduced. This week, we are able to mark Some users lose their favorites on update to Microsoft Edge as Addressed! Some users reported that they were missing some favorites after updating Microsoft Edge, and we believe this now be resolved. If you receive an update to Edge and notice that some of your favorites went missing, please submit that feedback through the browser so the team can investigate further!

We have a few updates to threads and asks this week, too. Shirley and her team are looking for your thoughts on InPrivate theming, while Kent posted a wonderful update to the discussion thread around the Provide run / open / save / save as options when downloading files item. Check out those threads to give us your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback on these items. We're also looking for more details and diagnostics from users running into the issue where the mouse cursor disappearing. From the first time I started having a computer, I finally deleted chrome. The edge has a very good translator for those who don't speak English well.

Is anybody else having trouble copying/pasting into text fields on build 84.0.488.1 ?

What I try to paste into Word online or Gmail nothing happens. I can still paste into the URL bar and text boxes (like this reply box).

Tried disabling all my extensions, but that didn't help. I then reinstalled Chrome Beta to troubleshoot and there were no problems. Nor in Chrome.
