Thanks for clearing that up! I checked my browsers—Edge doesn’t have the file, Opera is a fresh install and hasn’t updated yet to check, but Vivaldi has a 7z file called vivaldi.7z that I think does something similar.

Vivaldi does use the Chromium mini-installer and does retain the .7z archive in its versioned Installer folder. Multiple sources confirm the file lives at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Vivaldi\Application\<version>\Installer\vivaldi.7z alongside setup.exe.

Edge and Opera do not use the Chromium mini-installer. Edge uses its own update stack (EdgeUpdate / Windows Update), and Opera uses a custom installer. Neither retains a .7z in a versioned Installer folder.
Brave does retain chrome.7z (not renamed) in its Installer folder — BraveSoftware\Brave
Browser\Application\<version>\Installer\chrome.7z.

So the corrected statement would be: Browsers using the Chromium mini-installer (Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi, and smaller forks) retain a product-named .7z archive in their versioned Installer folder. Edge and Opera use custom installers and don't.

I noticed that with the latest update, Microsoft Edge’s size dropped from about 3.25 GB to almost 2 GB. But it doesn’t seem like they changed how they handle old installs. From what I understand, Microsoft keeps the old versions around for two reasons: one, so you can quickly roll back if something goes wrong with the new update, and two, because Edge WebView might still need the older version to keep working smoothly.

I realise it does keep (an) old versions, however at least here old versions are removed promptly, as soon as possible automatically far faster, than just weeks ago, it didn't used to be like that until recently????
