New Update Mozilla released a Firefox Nightly test build with vertical tabs

Mozilla released a Firefox Nightly test build recently that includes support for vertical tabs. This new functionality is not available in regular Firefox Nightly builds, but there is a way to get that build and test it for yourself.

Native vertical tabs support is a highly requested feature. It is placed third currently on Mozilla's Connect website, just behind native tab grouping, and the restoration of PWA support in Firefox.

Bad news is that it is not clear at this point whether Mozilla is going to go forward with the implementation. A post on Reddit by one of the project members suggests that the build is a "rough proof-of-concept". Some features tested in the build "did not survive". It is unclear which did not, as they are not mentioned.

Mozilla is, however, implementing those that survived the cut into Firefox. Again, the poster does not mention which those are. It is also not verified that the poster is actually a member of the project team, so take this with a grain of salt as well.

It is no secret that Mozilla is working on bringing vertical tabs to Firefox. The organization confirmed the plan back in May after a test version of Firefox leaked that supported the functionality already.

Now, Mozilla has added the functionality in Firefox Nightly. This is the cutting edge development version of the Firefox web browser. Most features are added to Nightly first before they make their way into Beta and then Release versions of the web browser.

Note: features may change during development and some may even be pulled before they reach the stable version of the Firefox web browser. This is a first look at the feature as it stands right now.

Vertical tabs is clearly a work in progress. It may take a while before the feature lands in Firefox stable. If you want to give it a try right now, you need to do the following:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Firefox Nightly on your system. You can grab a copy for all supported operating systems from Mozilla's website.
2. Load about:config in the Firefox address bar.
3. Select Accept the risk and Continue.
4. Search for sidebar.
5. Toggle the value of sidebar.revamp to True.
6. Toggle the value of sidebar.verticalTabs to true.
7. Restart the Firefox web browser.

Firefox should display vertical tabs right away. There is a "show sidebars" button to display open tabs and page titles. You may also select the customize option to move the sidebar from the left side to the right side.

The latest Firefox Nightly release makes it easier to test vertical tabs and the browser's new sidebar.

Mozilla launched support for the, much requested, vertical tabs feature in Firefox in June. Back then, it was necessary to flip several configuration switches manually to unlock the functionality.

Today's Nightly update changes this. Now, vertical tabs and sidebar can be enabled in the browser's settings. This exposes the feature to more testers and makes it easier to manage it.

• update to the latest Nightly,
• go to Settings > Firefox Labs,
• activate Sidebar and Vertical tabs experiments,
• click Customize toolbar in the toolbar right-click menu, and drag the sidebar icon to your toolbar. Clicking on the sidebar icon will allow you to expand vertical tabs.

Users on Reddit noticed that the recent Firefox Nightly updates introduced configs that allow turning on the Mica material (Mica alt, to be precise) on the top bar (tab strip). The implementation is in the early stages and needs some extra improvements, such as Mica support for vertical tabs. Also, there are no fancy materials in context menus and other parts of the browser.

Firefox will soon look much cooler on Windows 11, joining the club of browsers with the Mica material in the UI.
